A goal just before half-time ignited No. 2 seed Medina/Lyndonville to a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Eden at windy Vets Park this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class B-1 soccer playoffs.

Steven Anderson broke in clean and beat an Eden defender and the goalie to the ball to net the key first goal for Medina/Lyndonville with just 2:13 to go in the first half. James Ianni earned the first of his three assists on the play.

“The wind was a factor today so getting that goal just before the half carried us into the second half,” said Medina/Lyndonville coach Steve Luksch whose Mustangs kept the momentum from that tally to break the contest open with three second half tallies. “Sectional games are always intense and we came out and played like we needed to.” he added.

After having one goal wiped out by an off sides call, the Mustangs doubled their advantage when Anderson scored his team leading 16th goal of the season 12 minutes into the second half with an angle shot off an assist from Ianni who now has a team leading total of 15 assists on the season.

Keeping the momentum, Medina/Lyndonville closed out the scoring when Brennen O’Connor scored his first two goals of the season in the final 12 minutes off assists first from Ianni and then from Cedric Griffin.

Adam Hoot, who made a couple of key saves in the first half when the contest was scoreless, earned the shut out in goal.

Scott Barber, Barry Rogenmoser, Hayden Allis and O’Connor anchored the defense for the Mustangs and Anthony Pane keyed play in the midfield area,

The victory boosts the Mustangs to 11-4-2.

The Mustangs though will have little time to savor the victory as they play in the semifinals at 3:30 Thursday afternoon at All High Stadium in Buffalo against No. 3 Lafayette, a 1-0 victor over No. 6 Depew.
