This Week at Shelridge

Contributed Photo – READY FOR A VIDEO——The entire layout of Shelridge Country Club is due to be featured in a video which will be shot on site later this month or in July. The video is part of a program of inter-cooperation between Shelridge and Channel 7, Buffalo, and a number of other golf courses. It is presumed that the Medina links will appear later on Channel 7.

Give a golfer a little sunshine, a day of low humidity and soft caressing breezes and watch him smile. (We said “him” but the ladies have the same reaction.) Now, go a step further and provide some competition out on the old green eighteen and you have a golfer who has arrived in heaven. This is a way of reporting that the Spring Member-Member Tourney which opens at Shelridge tomorrow is a success with over 50 participants in two-man teams. Last year’s winners, Mark and Steve Eglin, are due to defend their crown and all the plans are in place.

Shotgun starts will take place at 1 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m Sunday for what is the first real major event of the club season. After tomorrow’s opening round all teams will be placed in flights.

On Saturday evening a gala party is scheduled and this affair is open to all Shelridge club members and their guests whether or not they are tourney players. It was announced Wednesday that the barbecue cook-out will be held near the first tee and music will be provided by The Sophisticats, a popular Niagara County trio led by Jim Sansone.

Speaking of tournaments, advance planning is already in motion for the Shelridge Open next month (July 19-20) and the committee hopes to get enough sponsorships to again provide a complimentary pair of golf shoes for tourney entrants.

A tournament that is now ready to open and which will run month-by-month all season is the President’s Cup affair, dating back to the origin of the club around 1959-60. It takes the format of match play——which pays homage to the kind of golf that was standard in most American national competition 80 years ago. Match play actually creates scoring which starts the game all over again with every advancing hole.

Sixteen golfers qualified for this event by turning in scores during the past month. The brackets will now be made up of the following (with qualifying scores): Matt Bush 68, Ken Ireland 70, Butch Stupnick 71, Joe Brzezinski 71, Dave Bellucci 72, Tom Pegelow 72, Mike Rippe 73, Gerry LaMont 73, Chuck Neuman 74, James Tee 74, Alex Misiti 75, Steve Barnes 76, Dave Wagner 76, Kyle Monti 76, Doug Beltz 76.

The Friday night couples league has retained its popularity and a “scramble” was arranged for May 30th and won by Dr. Bryant, Marguerite Richards, Marc Scarr, Debbie Miller, Ray Neuman and Missy Newman. “Low net” honors went to Rob and Tina Dennis and Tim and Sharon Zacher.

Short Shots

A general cry of “hurrah” went up from 230 members this week when a familiar and respected face re-appeared in the pro-shop. Head Professional Dave Green had been out for a little over a week to have pre-planned surgery and was back part-time in his usual chair on Wednesday. His face had its usual fixture, a sly smile. His operation was a success and he paid special tribute to Assistant Pro Dave Rose and a pro shop assistant, Brad Wilson, for carrying on with club affairs in his absence. “They carried on perfectly and I owe them real thanks.”
