Medina wrestling duo advances to states

Second place finishes at today’s Section VI Division 2 (small schools) tournament at Jamestown Community College was enough to earn two Medina wrestlers, Dominick Callara (102) and Gavin Ciarfella (126), berths in the upcoming state championships.

Callara rebounded from a pin loss in the finals to score a 7-5 decision win over Newfane’s Braydon Neglia in the bout for second place to advance to the states. Callara had advanced to the finals with a major decision win and a pin.

Ciarfella bounced back from a semifinal round loss to score a pair of consolation wins by a technical fall and a decision. He then decisioned Newfane’s Ayden Buttery 8-3 in the bout for second place to earn his spot in the state meet.

Roy-Hart’s Zach Hill also placed second to advance to the states. He rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to score three straight consolation round victories. He then decisioned Ricky Hess of Iroquois 4-1 in the bout for second place honors.

Albion had a pair of third place finishers in Jr. Morales (138) and Ellwood Hafner (145).

The state championships will be held at Albany on February 25 and 26.

In the Section V Division 2 championships at SUNY Brockport Lyndonville’s Payton Grabowski placed fifth at 172 lb.
