Medina wins field hockey sectional opener

A quick burst of two goals in the first five minutes ignited No. 3 seed Medina to a 4-2 win over No. 6 Wilson in a Section VI Class C field hockey quarterfinal playoff game this evening at Vets Park.

Sophia Castricone and Baileigh McAdoo scored the decisive early goals for the Mustangs.

Medina upped the lead to 3-0 by the end of the quarter on a goal by Iyla Lilleby

The Mustangs led 4-0 at the half on a second quarter goal by Emi Batista.

Wilson’s two goals game in the final 1:15 on tallies by Madelyn Krieger and Natalie Rossi.

Lilleby now has a school record 33 goals for the season and a school record total of 80 goals for her career. The single season total broke the old record of 25 set by Kim McKeever in 1979. The career total broke the old mark of 71 set by Jennifer Buondonno during the 1990 to 1993 seasons.

Medina will next visit No. 2 Eden in the semifinals on Thursday.

Eden downed No. 7 Roy-Hart 5-1.

Savannah Newton scored the Roy-Hart goal off an assist from Adella Dukes.

Barker 1, Holland/East Aurora 0
No 4 Barker nipped Holland/East Aurora 1-0 in a quarterfinal game played at Newfane.

Ella Taylor scored the lone goal for Barker with four minutes to go in the second quarter off an assist from Rachel Sutter.

Barker will next face top seeded Akron in the semifinals on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Alden.

Akron downed No. 8 Newfane 4-0 as Nevada Bergman had 2 goals and Ava Fox and Julia Klodzinski 1 each.
