Medina Unified scores win before large crowd

Jumping out to a 10-0 lead at the outset, the Medina Unified Basketball team went on to defeat visiting Newfane 45-34 today before a large crowd.

Aiden Cherry and Jackson Tuohey had four points each while Avion Johnson had two in the opening quarter.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth contest with each team scoring eight points. Steven Secore led Medina with four points. Avion Johnson and Tuohey both added two as Medina led 18-12 at the half.

The Mustangs exploded in the third quarter, scoring 19 points as Matthew Kennedy had the hot hand scoring 12. Tuohey had four and  Johnson hit a three-point shot. Medina led 37-22 going into the final period.

Newfane mounted a comeback in the final stanza, twice pulling within five points. However, Medina was able to hang on for the win. Russell Brunette, Johnson, Kennedy and Tuohey each had two points.

Kennedy led all scorers with 14 points. Tuohey had 12,Johnson 9, Cherry 4,Secore 4, and Brunette 2.

Medina is now 2-0 and takes on the Lockport Lions next Wednesday May 10th.

The Medina Unified squad received plenty of vocal support from members of the Mustangs baseball, lacrosse and softball teams.
