Medina Unified nipped in season finale
A second half comeback fell just short as the Medina Unified Basketball dropped a narrow 40-39 decision to Olmstead at the final buzzer in a season ending sectional playoff consolation game Thursday.
Olmstead raced out to a 10-4 first quarter lead. Malikiah McGill and Jackson Tuohey each had two points for the Medina.
The Mustangs started heating up in the second quarter by scoring eight points. However, Olmsted also scored eight points to maintain their six point lead at the half. McGill and Tuohey split Medina’s scoring with four points each.
Baskets came quickly and often in the third period. Medina scored eight baskets including two 3-pointers.
outscoring Olmsted 18-14 to pull within two going into the final stanza at 32-30. McGill led Medina with nine points, including a 3-pointer, while Logan Fiedner added another 3-pointer. Brennan Hinckley, Brooke Shingleton and Tuohey each had a 2-point basket.
The final quarter was a fairytale finish for Olmsted. Down by five points with just over two minutes remaining the Owls capitalized on two Medina turnovers to rally back to within one at 39-38 with 16 seconds remaining. The Owls then pulled out the win by scoring at the buzzer off another turnover.
Tuohey had four points to lead the Mustangs in the last quarter. McGill had three and Hinckley two.
McGill finished with 19, Tuohey 12, Hinckley 4, Fiedner 3 and Shingleton 2.
Medina finished the season with a 3-4 record.
