Medina Unified wins sectional basketball title

Completing an undefeated (7-0) season, the Medina Unified basketball defeated Tonawanda 36-24 in the sectional final at Lancaster Friday.

Avion Johnson and Xavier Moyer each scored 15 points and Jackson Tuohey 6 to account for all of the Mustangs scoring.

Medina grabbed a narorw 6-5 first quarter lead as Johnson scored 4 and Tuohey 2.

The Mustangs maintained a slender 15-13 advantage at the half as Johnson tallied 5 and Moyer 4 in the second quarter.

However, Tonawanda rallied in the third period outscoring Medina 9-6 to grab a 22-21 lead.

The Mustangs though came battling back in the decisive final quarter outscoring Tonawanda 15-2 to claim their first sectional title. Moyer led that rally with 9 points, several rebounds and 2 key steals. Tuohey added 4 points and Johnson 2.

After the game Moyer was given the Cross-Trainer Top Competitor Award and Johnson earned the Sportsmanship Award.
