Medina Unified basketball wins home finale

Closing out the home portion of the season on a high note, the Medina Unified basketbll team downed Akron 32-22 Frday to improve to 4-0.

Akron started quickly out of the gate, jumping to a 6-0 lead. Hitting four of their first five shots the Tigers led 12-6 at the end of the quarter.

The Mustangs continued gaining momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers 10-6 tying the score at 16 all at the half. Jackson Tuohey scored 6 points and Avion Johnson 4 during that stretch.

Medina then pulled away in the third quarter. Led by Matthew Kennedy’s 6 points, the Mustangs took a 28-20 lead going into the final stanza. Russell Brunette, Anthony Harrington and Johnson each added 2 points.

Medina kept the lead in a low scoring fourth quarter outscoring Akron 4-2. Xavier Moyer had all 4 of the Mustangs points.

On the evening for Medina, Johnson had 10 points, Kennedy 8, Tuohey 6, Moyer 4, Brunett 2 and Harrington 2.

This was the first loss for Akron this year.

Medina finishes the regular season Monday at Pembroke.
