Medina to host Fredonia in sectionals Sat.

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Medina’s Vincent Montague and his Mustang teammates will host Fredonia at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Section VI Class B1 quarterfinals.

Top seeded Medina will host No. 9 Fredonia at 1 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Section VI Class B1 boys basketball playoffs.

Medina brings  17-3 regular season record into the sectionals while Fredonia is 13-8 after downing No. 8 Depew 51-43 in the opening round on Wednesday.

The meeting will be the eighth in the postseason between the teams, a series in which Fredonia holds a 4-3 lead. However, Medina won the last meeting in the 2009 quarterfinals by a margin of 62-53.

The Mustangs this season have featured a balanced attack as Nate Sherman is averaging 13.3, Izaiah Rhim 10.4, Brian Fry 9.8, Vincent Montague 9.3 and Tyler Chinn 7.6.

The victor will face the winner of the No. 5 Springville (13-8) vs. No. 4 City Honors (17-3) quarterfinal in the semifinals at Buffalo State College on Tuesday.

Saturday’s other two quarterfinals will have No. 6 Newfane (13-8) at No. 3 Olean (20-0) and No. 7 East Aurora (11-10) at No. 2 Lackawanna (14-6).

In Class B2 quarterfinal action, No. 4 Wilson (14-6) will host No. 5 Southwestern (17-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday. The victor will face the winner of the No. 9 Maritime Charter (9-12) vs. No. 1 Allegany-Limestone (16-3) quarterfinal in the semifinals at Buffalo State on Tuesday.
