Giving the defending champions all they could handle, Medina dropped a narrow 15-14 overtime decision to Akron this evening in a Class D Division lacrosse game at Vets Park.

Trailing 14-11 with just 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, Medina rallied to send the contest into overtime as Brendan Luthart scored two goals and then Christian Silversmith netted the equalizer with 37 seconds to go.

However, Akron escaped with the slender win as Owen Hill scored the game winner with 3:26 to go in overtime.

“We took them to their limit. We showed we can play with them and we got some respect tonight,” said Medina Coach Gordy Luthart. “I’m just extremely proud of our team. It was a complete team effort. This is the hardest working team I’ve seen. They’re working their tails off and this effort really is a confidence booster.”

Hill and Donovan Nephew each finished with 4 goals for the Tigers.

Silversmith had 5 goals on the night for the Mustangs as Luthart and Mason Lewis both had 3. DaRon Bellan 2 and Tim Roy 1.

Trailing 3-0 after one period and 6-3 at the half, Medina rallied into a 9-8 lead after three quarters. Lewis scored three goals in the key third period which got the Mustangs back in the game as Bellan, Silversmith and Luthart each netted one.

Now at 2-1 in the division and 2-2 overall, Medina next hosts Brockport at 7 p.m. Saturday in a non league game.
