Medina spikers outlast Roy-Hart in 5 sets

Rallying from a two sets to one deficit, Medina battled back to outlast visiting Roy-Hart in a marathon five set Niagara-Orleans League volleyball match this evening 25-22, 16-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21.

Trailing 21-19 in the decisive fifth set, Medina got 6 straight clutch service points from Ellie Gross to claim the wild victory. Je’ne Beown polished off 3 of the points with spiking kills including the match winner. Maddie Williams also had a key spike for point 24.

In all there were 8 ties and 4 lead changes in the fifth set.

Roy-Hart’s last lead at 21-18 came after a pair of service points by Skyler Christopher the first of which was polished off by a kill by Aspen Moore.

Medina’s Grace Masse sets the ball as Skyler Christopher gets set to make a return for Roy-Hart.

Brown finished with a total of 18 kills, Williams 8 and Camri King 7 as Grace Masse added 27 assists and Gross 2 aces.

Moore had 10 kills and 4 blocks and Christopher 9 kills and 1 block for Roy-Hart.

Medina also got off to a quick start taking the opening set as Alyssa Beyer served up the final 4 points.

However, Roy-Hart answered right back to take the net two sets and grab a 2-1 lead in the match.

Olivia Vorholzer served up the final 4 points of the second set for the Lady Rams including a pair of aces. Moore also had a key 4 point run of service points (15-18), including 2 aces, which helped put Roy-Hart on top to stay at 20-9.

Christopher then served up 5 straight points midway through the third set to put the Lady Rams on top to stay at 13-4, a run which included 2 kills and a block by Moore.  Back-to-back aces by Moore then upped the lead to 16-5.

Medina did battle back to within two at 18-16 as Gross served up points 8-12 and Williams 14-16, a run which included 2 kills by Brown. However the Mustangs could get no closer.

A 4 point run of service points by Jessi Wood (20-23) gave Roy-Hart a little breathing room at 23-16 and a kills by Moore polished off the set winning point.

Medina though rebounded to even the match by taking the fourth set as Faith Henning served up points 21-24 and Brown registered a kill for the set winner.

The Mustangs then kept the momentum by winning a wild sea-saw battle in the decisive fifth set which saw Brown registered 7 kills, Williams 2 and Gross 2.

Medina and Roy-Hart are now both 1-1 in N-O action.

Wilson improved to 2-0 with a 25-11, 25-16, 26=5-17 win over visiting Albion (0-2) as Izzy Dinse had 6 kills and 5 blocks and Jenny Meyers 5 kills, 4 assists and 3 aces.
