Medina spikers outlast R-H in 5 sets

Albion, Lyndonville post road wins

In a sea-saw five set marathon, Medina outlasted visiting Roy-Hart 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-12 this evening to improve to 2-1 in Niagara-Orleans League volleyball competition.

In other N-O matches, defending champion Albion stayed perfect at 3-0 with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-9 victory at Akron as did Newfane with a 25-18, 25-8, 25-19 win over CSAT.

In Genesee Region League action, Lyndonville defeated host Kendall 20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 27-25.

Medina got off to a quick start taking the opening set 25-19 as Molley Gross served up points 2-7 and 17-19 and Nicole Blount 10-12 (2 aces) and 23-24, both aces.

Brittany Schultz followed up with a spike kill for the set winner.

Roy-Hart though battled back to take the next two sets and grab a 2-1 lead in the match.

Roy-Hart jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the second set as Skyler Christopher served up points 5-7 and Bea Bacon 10-15.

Medina could get no closer than 24-19 after that as the Lady Rams evened the match with a 25-19 win.

Likewise in the third set Roy-Hart built up a commanding 12 point ,19-7, advantage as Olivia Vorholzer served up points 2-8 and Rebecca Albrecht 10-12.

Medina though came battling back to rally into a brief 23-22 lead as Carley Schultz scored points 9-16, a run which included two service aces and a pair of kills by Blount, and Emma Ambrose scored points 20-23.

Turning back the challenge, Roy-Hart claimed the 26-24 overtime win as Malissa Maines served up the final two points.

However, Medina rebounded to retie the match at 2-2 by taking the fourth set 25-18.

Leading by a narrow 14-13 margin, the Mustangs pulled away behind a key run of five straight service points by Gross (15-19), a run which included three straight aces and was capped off by a kill by Brittany Schultz.

Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs then closed out the match by taking the fifth set 25-12.

Gross served up five straight points (3-7) to vault Medina out to a quick 7-1 lead.

Liz Newman later served up points 12-14 and Emily Kams 16-22 to help close out the set and the match. Gross had three kills and Blount two in the set.

Blount finished with a total of 16 kills and 7 aces, Brittany Schultz 6 kills and Kams 29 assists.

The loss drops Roy-Hart to 1-2.

Kelsee Soule had 7 kills, 11 digs and 3 aces; Chanyce Powell 5 kills, 6 digs and 5 aces; Sara Millspaugh 5 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces and Meghan Hurley 9 digs, 2 aces and 10 assists to lead Albion past Akron in three sets.

Aleah Foos added 3 blocks and 1 ace and Olivia Neidert 6 assists, 3 aces and 1 kill for the Purple Eagles.

Kendall 25-12-16-25

Cierra Riley had 8 aces, 3 kills and 1 block, Hailey Wetherbee 6 aces and Morgan Hungerford 3 aces, 3 kills and 3 blocks to lead Lyndonville to a four set Genesee Region League victory at Kendall.

Chelsea Wright had 8 assists and 2 digs for Kendall.

CSAT 18-8-19

Erica Wright had 7 aces and 5 kills and Madison Wolcott 10 kills and 7 assists to lead Newfane (3-0) to the three set win over CSAT (0-2).
