Ending a 14 year drought, Medina scored a rare Niagara-Orleans League field hockey victory over Akron as the Mustangs posted a 2-0 shutout victory this afternoon at Akron.

Sarah Cochrane scored what proved to be the game winner with 30 seconds remaining in the first half and Grace Cook added an insurance tally at the 19 minute mark of the second half as the Mustangs claimed their first victory over the Lady Tigers since 2004.

Alissa Blount earned the shutout in goal.

“We had a real solid defensive effort,” said Medina Coach Amber Cleaveland. “It’s just extremely exciting for us.”

Medina improves to 3-2 and Akron slips to 4-2.

Undefeated (5-0) Roy-Hart remained in sole possession of first place with a 3-0 win at Wilson (2-3) on first half goals by Lexi Lovewell, Ashley Hill and Sam Choate. Jamie Bower earned the shutout in goal.

Barker stayed just a game off the pace at 4-1 with a 6-0 victory over Newfane (0-6) as Katrina Clare had 2 goals and Kaedynce Schumacher, Ciara Gregoire, Miya Goodale and Madison Gancasz 1 each.

Barker next visits Roy-Hart in a key contest at 4:45 p.m. Thursday and Medina hosts Wilson.
