Medina, R-H win field hockey playoff openers

No. 3 seed Medina and No. 4 Roy-Hart both scored home field shutout victories today in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class C field hockey playoffs.

Medina blanked No. 6 Eden 4-0 and Roy-Hart shutout No. 5 Newfane 11-0.

Medina grabbed a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds in the second quarter on a goal by Iyla Lilleby.

Penelope Schalck doubled the Mustangs lead to 2-0 at the half when she scored with just 1:11 to go in the period.

Keeping the momentum the Mustangs made it 3-0 three minutes into the third quarter on a goal by Lydia Fox.

Alex Strong rounded out the Mustangs scoring with a goal in the first two minutes of the final quarter.

Roy-Hart got goal production from five different players as Brooke Zglinicki, Cheyenne Stilwell, Jessica VanKuren and Sydney Rhinehart each scored twice and Olivia Marsillo once.

Zglinicki also dished out three assists while Stilwell and Justine Laverty each had two.

Thursday’s semifinal matchups at 6 p.m. at Williamville North will have Medina vs. No. 2 Barker and Roy-Hart vs. No. 1 Akron.
