Medina ousts Newfane in Class B1 softball playoff opener; Tonawanda nips Albion

Scoring in every inning, No. 5 seeded Medina romped to a 17-0 victory over No. 12 Newfane in the opening round of the Section VI Class B1 softball sectionals this evening at Vets Park.

The victory advances Medina to a quarterfinal contest on Thursday at No. 4 City Honors which defeated No. 13 CSAT 26-7.

Brandi Guild led Medina at the plate by banging out four hits including two doubles and a pair of triples. Morgan Allis and Ashlee Howell also both had two hits.

A third inning double play from Kenward to Guild to Brooklyn Brown highlighted the Mustangs defensive effort.

Medina scored a quick run in the first inning as Guild tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Lacey Kenward.

An RBI double by Allis and a run on a fielders choice play upped the lead to 3-0 in the second inning.

The Mustangs then began to pull away by scoring four times in the third inning on RBI doubles by Guild and Kenward, an error and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Brown for a 7-0 lead.

Medina capped off the win by erupting for 8 runs in the sixth inning  highlighted by a three run triple by Guild, an RBI double by Kenward and run producing singles by Camri King and Allis.

Tonawanda 8, Albion 7
In another Class B1 opener, No. 9 Albion dropped a narrow 8-7 decision at No. 8 Tonawanda.

Aly Knaak and Emani Poole both had 3 hits for Albion as Kendall Derisley and Brylie Hapeman both had 2. Derisley drove in a total of three runs and Poole two.

In a Class B2 opener Wilson defeated JFK 18-0.
