A fast start and a strong finish earned the No. 3 seeded Medina Mustangs FC a 5-3 victory over No. 6 Buffalo Night in the quarterfinals of the Buffalo District Soccer League Sunday evening at Vets Park.

Medina jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes as Peter Martillotta scored twice, first on a penalty kick and then on a rebound shot.

Buffalo Night did rally into a 2-2 tie by halftime but Medina rebounded with a 3-1 scoring edge down the stretch to claim the win and advance to the semifinals.

Martillotta, Nate Dillenbeck and Steven Anderson took turns scoring the second half goals for the Mustangs.

Dillenbeck, Mateo May, Barry Rogenmoser, Casey Winicki and Greg Husung all earned assists on the evening.

Improving to 8-2-1, Medina will next visit No. 2 seeded LA United in the semis next Sunday. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season.

The other quarterfinal saw No. 5 JL Dutch down No. 4 Brighten Stars 3-1 to advance to a semifinal meeting with top seeded Ukraine.

Medina’s Coby Albone battles for control of the ball as Martillotta moves in to assist.
