Medina/Lyndonville set to open N-O track season Thursday

Medina/Lyndonville will host Wilson at 4:15 p.m. Thursday to open the Niagara-Orleans League track season.

The Medina/Lyndonville girls squad, which went 3-3 last spring, is led by two underclassmen, junior Holly Heil and sophomore Martha Gardner, who were both double winners at the N-O All-League meet. Heil won both the 400 and 800 and Gardner the 1500 and 3000. Junior Emma Gardner also placed fourth in the high jump and fifth in both the shot-put and discus.

The underclassmen dominated 27 member girls squad includes only 3 seniors and 4 juniors along with 13 sophomores, 4 freshmen, 2 eighth graders and 1 seventh grader.

The Medina/Lyndonville boys squad, which went 5-1 in N-O competition last spring, is likewise led by a trio of All-League meet individual event place finishers including Matt Cochrane (2nd in 400, 3rd in triple jump), Austin Heil (6th in 400) and Ryan Leffler (6th in 800), all seniors.

Heil, Cochrane and senior Derek Donley were all members of the winning 1600 relay team. Heil and Cochrane were also both members of the winning 3200 relay team.

The other seniors on the 27 member squad include Steven Anderson, Austin Brown, John Miller and Sam Sims.
