Traditionally high school alumni weekends are held on a football weekend during the fall. However, Medina High is planning something different this year by holding a summertime alumni event next weekend in an effort to make it possible for more alumni to attend during the summer vacation time.

The three day event is scheduled for August 8-10 primarily at Vets Park.

“I’ve always wanted to have an alumni event like this,” said Medina varsity football coach Eric Valley who is helping to organize the event which will include a variety of games alumni can participate in. “It’s a fund raiser to help our sports teams and hopefully it will give more people a reason to come back to Medina during the summer.”

The event will get under way on Friday evening August 8 with Vets Park open for batting practice at 5 p.m. followed by an alumni lacrosse game at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday will feature a golf tournament at Shelridge followed by a banquet at the Knights of Columbus hall which all participating alumni are invited to attend.

Sunday will feature a variety of alumni games at Vets Park beginning at 10 a.m. with a girls soccer game. A baseball game for alum 30 and younger with be held at noon followed by a home run derby at 1:45 p.m., a baseball game for alumni over 30 at 2:15 p.m., a young alumni men’s soccer game from 4 to 6 p.m. and finally an older alumni men’s soccer game from 6 to 8 p.m.

“I’m really excited to see how it goes. For those alumni who played sports at Medina it will really be like a reunion,” said Valley. “I’ve had a lot of positive feedback and interest. We’re looking for a fun time and we’re hoping this evolves in the years to come so we can add more games for the alumni to take part in.
