Medina girls upend Burgard in B1 opener

No. 13 seed Medina upended host No. 4 Burgard 36-31 this evening in the opening round of the Section VI Class B1 girls basketball playoffs.

Sarah Sones poured in 22 points and also grabbed off 22 rebounds to lead the way for Medina which went just 1-19 during the regular season.

Anya Bloom added 10, Julie Porter 3 and Nodia Osby 1 for the Mustangs.

Trailing 18-16 at the half, Medina used an 11-7 third period scoring edge to rally into the lead for good at 27-25.  Sones scored all 11 of the Mustangs points during that key stretch.

The Mustangs then used a 9-7 fourth period scoring edge, including 5 by Sones, to put a lock on the victory.

Burgard finishes the season at 13-2.

Medina next visits the winner of the No. 12 Olean vs. No. 5 Dunkirk game in the quarterfinals on Friday.
