Medina girls earn first win
Combining a fast start with a strong finish, Medina snapped a season opening five game losing streak by defeating visiting CSAT 41-29 this afternoon in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball make-up contest.
Emily Kams took game high scoring honors with 14 points, Taylor Miller netted 10 and Nicole Blount 9 to lead the attack for Medina which also had Maddy Winters score 6 and Molley Gross 2.
“They played very well,” Medina Coach Ken Haak said. “We had our moments but overall we played very well.”
Jordan Frasier led CSAT with 10.
Medina jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead as Kams netted 8 quick points, Miller 5, including a three, and Blount and Gross two each.
However, cold shooting and turnovers slowed the Medina offense in the second period as CSAT used a 7-2 scoring edge to cut the deficit to two, 19-17, at the half.
A pair of baskets by Frasier helped CSAT grab a brief 25-21 lead in the third period but Medina answered with a jumper and a lay-up by Winters and a lay-up by Kams to pull back into a 27-27 tie at the three-quarter mark.
Keeping the momentum, the Mustangs then blitzed CSAT 14-2 down the stretch to claim that first victory of the season.
A lay-up by Kams at the outset of the period put Medina back on top to stay and Miller quickly followed up with a three to give the Mustangs a little breathing room.
A three and a jumper by Blount, along with jumpers by Winters and Miller then put a firm lock on the Mustangs win.
Medina is now 1-2 in the league and 1-5 overall while CSAT is 0-3 in N-O action.
