Medina cagers top Burgard for first win

Gaining victory No. 1 on the young season, Medina bested visiting Burgard 47-39 this evening in a non league boys basketball game.

Jalin Cooper scored 18, Justin Morgan 11 and Tyler Ames 8 to lead the way for Medina which snapped a brief season opening two game losing streak.

Medina jumped out to a 12-6 first quarter lead as Cooper and Mason Lewis each scored 4 points.

The Mustangs increased the lead to 28-16 at the half as Cooper tallied 9, Daryl Haynes 4 and Morgan 3 in the second quarter.

Two threes by Morgan, along with 5 points by Cooper, in the third period helped keep Medina up 41-28 at the three-quarter mark.

Medina next hosts Newfane at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Mustangs Niagara-Orleans League opener.

Newfane 50, Akron 31
Newfane opened N-O competition by defeating host Akron (0-2) 50-31.

Chad Gilson and Zach Lajoie both scored 9 points to lead the balanced attack for Newfane which held a 24-12 advantage at the half.
