Medina cagers to host Depew

Facing a familiar postseason foe, No. 3 seed Medina will host No. 6 Depew at 7 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class B1 boys basketball tournament.

It marks the second time in three years that the two teams have met in the playoffs. Depew bested Medina 60-49 in the B1 pre-quarterfinals in 2012.

Depew advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating No. 11 City Honors 79-68 Wednesday.

Medina brings a 12-6 record into the playoffs while Depew is at 9-10.

In the Class B2 quarterfinals on Friday, No. 5 Roy-Hart will face No. 4 Health Sciences at Nichols at 7 p.m. The Rams advanced with a 79-71 overtime victory over No. 12 Southwestern on Wednesday.

Undefeated Niagara-Orleans League champion and top seeded Barker will host No. 9 Portville at 7 p.m. Friday in the Class C1 quarterfinals.

The Raiders bring an 18-0 regular season record into the playoffs while Portville is at 10-9 after defeating No. 8 Maritime Charter 62-34 in the opening round Wednesday.

In Section V, No. 5 Kendall will visit No. 4 Lyons in a Class C2 quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Friday. Genesee Region League Division 1 champion Kendall and Lyons both went 12-6 during the regular season.

This evening in girls basketball playoff action, No. 2 Albion hosts No. 10 Iroquois at 7 p.m. in a Section VI Class A2 quarterfinal. Iroquois advanced by defeating No. 7 Cheektowaga 67-65 in the pre-quarterfinals.

Albion is at 12-6 and Iroquois 8-11.

Also this evening, the No. 5 Barker girls squad visits No. 4 Silver Creek at 7 p.m. in a Class C1 quarterfinal.
