Medina cagers edge Newfane

Trailing by one, Medina used a clutch late 7-0 scoring burst to edge past host Newfane 57-52 this evening in the Niagara-Orleans League season opener.

Down 50-49, the Mustangs scored seven straight points from the free throw line, three of which came after a pair of timely steals by Jason Hellwig, to rally into the lead for good at 56-50. Hellwig had four points and Brennan Zinkievich two during that rally.

Hellwig finished with a game high 22 and Tyler Ames netted 15 to lead Medina. Dylan Lewis added 8, Zinkievich 5, Devonte Howard 3, and Justin Morgan and David Garrow 2 each for the Mustangs.

Chad Gilson had 15 to lead the way for Newfane.

Medina jumped out to an 18-15 first quarter lead as Ames had 6 and Hellwig 5.

The Mustangs maintained leads of 29-24 at the half and 43-36 at the three-quarter mark before the sea-saw fourth quarter began.

Wilson 64, Albion 45
Trailing 16-13 after one period, Wilson used a big 27-14 second quarter scoring barrage to key a 64-45 victory over visiting Albion.

Kyle Bradley scored 17 of his game high 28 points to lead the Lakemen in the decisive period.

Clayton Stanton scored 11, Austin Loyd 10, Gary Moore and Manny Thompson 6 each and Alex Bison 5 for Albion. Loyd tallied all 10 of his points in the opening period to spark the Purple Eagles out to the early lead.

Akron 55, Barker 41
Drew Butler scored 20, including six three’s and Brendan Weirheiser 10 to spark Akron to a 55-41 victory over visiting Barker.

Christopher Sweeney scored 12 Nate Luckman 8, Thomas Callaghan 7, Tanner Gregoire 6, Kyle Secore and Josh Mead 3 and Sean Benoit 2 for Barker.

Barker grabbed a 16-14 first quarter lead but Akron pulled even at 25-25 at the half and then used a 17-8 third period scoring surge to move out to a 42-33 advantage heading into the final stanza.
