Medina bows in OT; Cooper tops 1,000 mark

St. Paul, Ontario bested Medina 68-58 this evening in the I-90 Challenge at Villa Maria College as Mustangs senior Jalin Cooper surpassed the 1,000 point career scoring mark.

Cooper hit the 1,000 point milestone with his second basket of the night, a layup in the opening quarter.  In becoming the Mustangs eighth 1,000 point scorer, he now has a career total of 1,018 as he finished the evening with 22. He is now seventh on the Mustangs all-time scoring list which is led by Levi Pace’s 1,280 points.

Izaiah Rhim added 14, Alex Allis 12 and Tyler Chinn 8.

Medina sent the game into overtime when Chinn made two clutch free throws with five seconds remaining in regulation time.

However, St. Paul pulled out the victory by outscoring Medina 15-5 in the overtime period including making good on 7 of 8 free throw attempts.

St. Paul held leads of 23-12 after one period, 35-29 at the half and 44-38 at the three-quarter mark.

Cooper tallied 9 in the opening paired and Rhim 7 in the second as Allis made all of his points on four threes.

Medina next hosts Orchard Park at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in a non league game.

Elba 70, Albion 58
Leading by a narrow 56-55 margin, Elba outscored Albion 14-3 in the fourth quarter to claim a 70-58 victory in the consolation game of the Batavia Tournament.

Liam Ward scored 16, Deyonci Farley and Demetrius Gardner 11 and Bryce Pritchard 10 for Albion which led 34-33 at the half.

Collin O’Halloran scored 24, Ben Pflaumer 19 and Colton Dillon 14 for Elba.

Wrestling

Medina’s Elijah Sones (195) placed third at the Akron Wrestling Tournament.
