Medina bows in Challenge series at GCC

Medina tipped off the Niagara-Orleans League vs. Genesee Region League Girls Basketball Challenge series at Genesee Community College this evening as the Mustangs dropped a 45-37 decision to Wheatland-Chili.
Vanessa Guerrero scored 18, Whitney Thrush 11 and Jaeda Mekker 8 to lead the way for W-C.
Sam Heschke took game high honors with 19, including five threes, for Medina as Alexa Demmer had 11 and Ariel Smith 7.
W-C jumped out to a 16-11 first period lead as Guerrero scored 10. Heschke hit two threes and Smith one to keep Medina close.
W-C extended its lead to 10, 27-17, at the half but Medina came battling back in the third quarter.
The Mustangs put together an 18-11 scoring edge to slice the deficit to three, 38-35, at the three-quarter mark.
Heschke scored 11, including three threes, and Demmer 7, including a three, to spark that rally.
The Mustangs in fact closed to within one twice late in the period, first at 34-33 as Heschke converted a three into a four-point play, and then at 36-34 after a jumper by Demmer.
However, Medina could get no closer as the Mustangs were blanked from the field in the low scoring fourth quarter.
W-C tallied the first seven points of the final period to pull away for good with a 10 point, 45-35, advantage.
Wilson 39, Pembroke 22
Wilson bested Pembroke 39-22 in another N-O vs. G-R Challenge contest as Abbie Faery scored 15 and Isabella Thrush 10.
Jayden Hootman led Pembroke with 11.
Oakfield-Alabama 50, Akron 33
Oakfield-Alabama bested Akron 50-33 in the final game of the tripleheader as Allison Williams scored 18, Alea Groff 12 and Allison Harkness 8.
