Yeoman work by the defense made a lone goal stand up as Medina nipped Akron 1-0 in a Niagara-Orleans League field hockey game this evening at Vets Park.

Lacey Kenward scored the only goal Medina needed as it turned out just 11 minutes into the first half.

Mustangs goalie Tessa Pecoraro, who made 11 saves including several big stops in the second half, and her defensive mates including Sophia Cardone, Abi Neuman and Faith Ann Vanderwalker made the slender lead hold up for the game’s final 49 minutes.

“We just played a great defensive game,” said Medina Coach Amber Clevealand.

The victory improves Medina’s N-O record to 3-2 as Akron slips to 4-2.

In the other N-O games front-running Barker improved to 5-0 with a 10-0 win over Newfane (0-5) and runner-up Roy-Hart (4-1) downed Wilson (2-3) 2-0.

Barker built up a 7-0 first half lead as Katrina Clare scored 3 goals, Ciara Gregoire 2 and Serena Harris and Emily Wagner 1 each.

Ella Gooding, Madison Gancasz and Rachel Hurtgam then each scored a goal in the second half.

Medina’s Abby Blount looks to advance the ball up the sideline as Emerson Polkowski comes in to defend for Akron.
