Medina, Barker win softball sectional openers

Medina and Barker both scored victories in the opening round of the Section VI softball playoffs this afternoon.

No. 9 seed Medina nipped host No. 8 Cleveland Hill 15-11 in 8 innings in a Class B2 contest.

The Mustangs scored 4 times in the eighth inning to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinal at top seeded Eden. Iyla Lilleby and Miriam Fike both had hits to key the rally.

Lilleby finished with 4 hits, Gianna Greco 3 and Fike 2. Lilleby, Greco and Ki’Mani Poole all had hits to highlight a 6 run second inning.

In the circle, Faith Oberther registered 9 strikeouts.

Barker 16, Holland 3
Peyton Bradley had 3 hits, including a double and triple, and Natalie Brandel belted a two-run homer to highlight the offense for No. 5 seed Barker in the Class C victory over visiting No. 12 Holland.

Barker, which next visits No. 4 Randolph in the quarterfinals on Thursday, scored 5 times in both the third and fifth innings.

Brandel pitched the first 4 innings and struck out 4.

Springville 18, Albion 13
No. 10 seed Springville rallied for 10 runs in the seventh inning to outlast host No. 7 Albion in a Class B1 opener.

Mackenzie Snook and Aly Knaak both had 3 hits and Maya Knaak and Alison Gibosn 2 each for Albion. Snook’s hits included two triples with 5 RBIs as Aly Knaak drove in 3 runs.

Sectional Roundup
Niagara-Orleans League champion and third seeded Roy-Hart will host No. 6 JFK in a Class B2 quarterfinal at 5 p.m. Thursday. JFK ousted No. 11 Allegany-Limestone 11-2.

No. 7 Akron outlasted No. 10 Southwestern 10-9 in 12 innings and No. 12 Newfane downed No. 5 Olmsted 14-6 in other Class B2 contests.

In another Class C game No. 7 Wilson bested No. 10 Salamanca 13-4.
