Medina and Albion in action in youth football

Medina went 2-2 against visiting Newfane and Albion was 1-2 against Barker/Roy-Hart in Niagara Orleans Football Association (NOFA) action on Saturday.

Beginners Division
Medina Ponys 25, Newfane 6
A game that was effectively a playoff game between the 5-1 Newfane Hurricanes and 6-1 Medina Ponys starts off tight with both teams making good defensive plays in a scoreless first quarter. The Ponys broke it open in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown runs from Damareon Shine of 18 and 44 yards and a extra point run from QB Zach Allen.

In the third quarter the Ponys struck again as Remi Avery ran 50 yards for a TD and a 19-0 score. Shine finished the score in the fourth quarter with this third TD of the game, this time from 54 yards out to make it 25-0. The Hurricanes scored late to break up the shutout the Ponys finish their regular season 7-1.

Mini Division
Newfane 21, Medina Colts 12
The Colts started out quick in this one as Marcel Lamar ran 85 yards for a TD and a 6-0 lead. However, Newfane controlled the game from here on scoring the next three TDs to make it 21-6. The Colts fought back on a 45 yard TD run from Ja’Keir Taylor to cut the lead to 21-12 after a failed two point conversion but weren’t able to get the ball back.

JV Division
Medina Broncos 15, Newfane 13
In a huge matchup between teams fighting for the final playoff spot the Broncos and Lightning played a defensive battle that ended in a huge defensive play for the home team.

The Broncos opened the scoring in the first quarter as Zach Graham hit Trey Rhim for a 39 yard TD pass and then a short 2 point pass to Jude Lacy to make it 8-0. The Lightning fight back and score a couple of times to make it 13-8.

Then, with under 2 minutes to play, Newfane was driving inside the Medina 20 and looking to run out the clock. However, on third and 7 they went for the finishing shot and tried a pass play to put the game away. Lacy undercut the receiver, grabbed the ball and took it back 85 yards for a pick six and Zahkius Chinn added the extra point to make it 15-13. The defense finished things from there and the Broncos put themselves in a good position to head to the playoffs.

Varsity Division
Newfane 19, Medina Stallions 6
The game started great for the Stallions as they forced an early Newfane punt and the snap went over the punters head and they tackled him on the 7 yard line. Christian Moss scored a 2 yard TD run to go up 6-0 after a missed extra point but it costs as Moss had an injury and could not continue.

From there Newfane ran very well and controlled the game posting a 19-6 win. The Stallions finish their regular season at 6-2 and look forward to the playoffs in two weeks and a likely matchup with Batavia.

Beginner Division
Barker-Roy Hart 26 Albion 19

Camden Holt led the offense with 139 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Lincoln Voorhes picked up 49 yards and a touchdown.

Holt had 13 tackles for the Little Eagles defense. Voorhes 6, Jayden Russo, Kyle Schomske and Kolton Berry were in on 4 stops.

Mini Division
Albion 25 BRH 0

Landyn Galligan anchored the defense to a shutout. Galligan picked up 9 tackles on the day. Michael McElwain 5, Landon Farrell, Heyden Almonte, Anthony O’Neal and Conner Hinkley had 3 each.

Almonte had 168 yards rushing with 3 td’s. Matthew Schomske had 51 yards, O’Neal 43 and Giovanni LaMartina had a 24 yard TD and a PAT.

JV Division
BRH 2 Albion 0

Chris Almonte led the defense with 10 tackles. Jonah Elsenheimer had 5 tackles and a sack. Thailer Seibert and Rocco Sidari had 4 each. Seibert had a interception, Stryker Sanders and Tyriek Johnson both had a fumble recovery.

Sidari led the offense with 32 yards rushing, LJ Simmons had 23 yards.
