Medina, Albion split in X-C opener

Medina and Albion split in a season opening Niagara-Orleans League cross-country meet this afternoon on the Medina course.

Medina won the boys meet 20-32 and Albion took the girls meet 17-42.

The Newfane boys bested Medina 23-36 and Albion 15-50.

The defending N-O champion Newfane girls likewise downed Medina 17-44 and Albion 23-32.

The Medina boys were led by Dan Heil, who finished second, and Alden Cayea who placed fourth.

Setting the pace for the Albion girls were Alanna Holman who took second and Emma Mathes who placed fifth. Medina’s top finisher was Hannah Heil in ninth.

The Newfane boys were sparked by the 1-3-5 finish of Sam Auernhamer, Collin McCabe and Noah Thorton.

The Lady Panthers were led by the sparked by the 1-3-4 finish of Kim Goerss, Vanessa Burkard and Lydia Chunco.

In the other N-O boys openers defending champion Barker downed Wilson 27-31 and Akron bested Roy-Hart 26-31. The individual winners were Wilson’s Will Schwarzmuel and Roy-Hart’s Ozzy Moore.

In the other girls openers, Wilson defeated Barker 25-21 and Akron downed Roy-Hart 27-32. The individual winners were Barker’s Gabby Baker and Akron’s Margo Henley.

Medina’s Hannah Heil has the lead here over the Albion duo of Emma Mathes and Alanna Holman early in the race.
