Compiling a 4-1 record, the Medina 12U Fillies softball team earned second place honors at the Wellsville Diamond Dawg Tournament over the weekend.

The Fillies went 3-0 on Saturday defeating Olean 9-1, Warsaw 22-17 and Wellsville 8-5 to earn the No. 1 seed going into Sunday’s competition.

Medina opened Sunday’s action by defeating Warsaw 16-3 in the semifinals with strong defense and timely hitting.

Scoring in every inning with hits from Micaela Erway, Carina Kingsbury, Brooklyn Brown, Camri King, Lacey Kenward, Chloe Stinson, Faithann Vanderwalker, Grace Cook, Hannah Kenward, Tessa Boyce and Elle Gross, the Fillies cruised into the championship game against Wellsville.

In the title contest, Wellsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring once in the second inning and twice in the fourth.

Medina battled back to tie the game in the fifth but Wellsville answered with what proved to be the game winning run in the sixth.

The Fillies did have scoring chances in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not score again as Wellsville emerged with a narrow 4-3 victory.

“It was a great game by both teams,” said Fillies Coach Matt Maynard. “Our girls really played hard all weekend and should be very proud of what they accomplished.”

The Fillies will be competing in the Mel Ott Tournament July 24-26.
