CARLTON – Firefighters from Carlton try to put out a fire at a double-wide trailer this morning at 1763 Waterport Rd.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene just before 9:30 a.m. with reports of smoke coming from the house.
A man was found deceased inside the residence, Sheriff Chris Bourke said. He is awaiting positive identification of the body before releasing the name.
The sheriff said two deputies, John Doyle and Ashleigh Stornelli, suffered minor injuries when then attempted to get in the house. They broke windows and forced open a door, but were driven back by heavy smoke and heat. They drove themselves to Medina Memorial Hospital to have their injuries checked.
A next-door neighbor, Sarah Stasaitis, saw the smoke coming from the home and called 911. She also attempted to get inside and check on an elderly man who lives there, but she also was hit with a wall of smoke when she opened a garage door.
She also pounded on the windows to try to get the resident’s attention, but didn’t hear a response.
Firefighters from multiple companies in Orleans County responded to the scene, including Carlton, Albion, Murray, Lyndonville, Medina and Shelby. This home is at the corner of Waterport Road and Clark Mills Road.
This is the second fatal fire in Orleans County in less than two weeks. David Greene, 68, was killed in a fire in Knowlesville on Oct. 22.
