Lyndonville tops Northstar in sectional opener

Improving to 15-2 on the season, No. 2 seeded Lyndonville defeated visiting No. 7 Northstar 7-1 this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Section V Class D1 baseball tournament.

Mike Wells went the distance on the mound for Lyndonville allowing only 3 hits and striking out 7.

Jacob Hoffee, Eric Neace and Dawson Joy each had a pair of hits to lead the Tigers at the plate.

Leading 2-0, Lyndonville put a lock on the victory by erupting for 5 runs in the sixth inning on two-run singles by Kane Flynn and Hoffee and a bunt by Nolan Donald.  Singles by Joy and Zach Johnson ignited the uprising.

Earlier, the Tigers scored once in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Johnson and once in the fifth on a home run by Hoffee.

Lyndonville will next face the winner of the No. 6 Genesee Valley vs. No. 3 Alfred-Almond in the semifinals Tuesday.

Gananda 17, Holley 2

No. 2 Gananda exploded for 10 runs in the first inning to key a 17-2 win over visiting No. 7 Holley in a Class C1 quarterfinal.

Andrew Cary had a double for Holley.
