Rebounding quickly from a bad first inning, top seeded Lyndonville opened defense of its Section V Class DD baseball championship with a 16-2 romp over visiting No. 9 Avoca this afternoon.

Avoca jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on four hits in the top of the first inning but managed just two more hits and no runs the rest of the way against Lyndonville hurler Chris Scroger who struck out four.

The Lyndonville defense kept the first inning damage to a minimum as Jacob Hoffee, Ty Hrovat and Brandon Schoolcraft combined to turn a clutch double play.

Lyndonville, which left two runners stranded in the bottom of the first, got rolling in the second frame by scoring four times highlighted by a two run single by Hoffee.

Singles by Michael Wells and Trevor Bentley and an error loaded the bases to set up the threat.

In all, the Tigers banged out a total of 18 hits including three by both Wells and Justin Edwards and two each by Hoffee, Hrovat, Scroger, Bentley, AJ Buckland and Evan Milleville.

Lyndonville improves to 19-1 to set a new school record for most wins in a season.

The Tigers will next play in the semifinals on Tuesday against No. 4 Arkport which romped past HAC 17-2.
