Local wrestlers set for state championships

Lyndonville and Medina will both have wrestlers competing in the Division 2 state championships this weekend at Albany.

Lyndonville will be represented by junior Sebastian Temich (152) and senior Payton Grabowski (172) and Medina by senior Dominick Callara (110).

Temich, who brings a 39-8 record into the tournament, is seeded 9th and has drawn a bye in the first round. His first match will be against No. 8 Joe Steimel from Shoreham – Wading River who is 39-4. The victor will face the winner of the match between top seeded Sean Tansey from the Collegiate School who is 44-5 and No. 17 Michael Malfitano from Pearl River who is 30-6 in the quarterfinals.

Grabowski, who has a 42-5 record, is seeded No. 12 and will face 21st seed Armando Espinal from Lawrence who is 12-12. The victor will face No. 5 Landen Smith from Saranac who is 38-3.

Callara, who has a 23-3 record, is seeded 8th and also draws a bye in the opening round. His first match will be against No. 9 Brock Frederick from South Jefferson/Sandy Creek who is 29-1. The victor will face the winner of the match between top seeded Darren Fiorance from, BGAH who is 32-1 and No. 17 John Parisi from Nanuet who is 20-7 in the quarterfinals.

The tournament begins on Friday and concludes on Saturday with the semifinals and finals.
