Local teams earn Scholar/Athlete awards

Nearly 20 local teams are among the honorees on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s (NYSPHSAA) statewide list of winter sports season Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals which was released this past week.

In all some 2,475 Scholar-Athlete teams and 30,497 individuals across the state involving 569 schools were recognized for having averages of 90 or higher.

“Congratulations to the Scholar-Athlete teams and individuals from the winter 2020 season,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “The Scholar-Athlete program continues to be one of the most rewarding endeavors we encourage here at the Association. The winter season was extremely challenging this year, so to see this many student-athletes honored for their work in the classroom is truly rewarding.”

Locally the Holley, Kendall and Lyndonville boys basketball squads have earned Scholar-Athlete team honors.

In girls basketball the Albion, Holley, Kendall, Medina, Barker and Roy-Hart teams have all been honored.

Also earning Scholar-Athlete Team honors are the Albion, Medina and Roy-Hart boys and girls swim squads as well as the Holley, Kendall and Median competitive cheerleading squads.

In addition, Individual Scholar-Athlete honors have been earned by over 200 local student-athletes.

Albion’s individual honorees include 14 in boys swimming, 12 in wrestling, 10 in girls basketball, 5 in boys basketball and 4 each in girls swimming and competitive cheerleading.

Holley’s has 16 in competitive cheerleading, 7 in wrestling and 6 in boys basketball.

Kendall has 8 in boys basketball and 6 in both girls basketball and competitive cheerleading.

Lyndonville has 6 in boys basketball, 5 in wrestling and 4 each in girls basketball and competitive cheerleading.

Medina has 13 in girls swimming, 12 in boys swimming, 5 in girls basketball and 8 in competitive cheerleading.

Roy-Hart has 17 in boys swimming, 16 in girls swimming and 8 in girls basketball.

Barker has 8 in girls basketball.
