Albion opened the high school wrestling season with a 44-36 win over visiting Byron-Bergen in a non league match this evening.

Leading 38-36, Albion locked up the victory on a second period pin in 3:30 by Jackson Snook (285).

The Purple Eagles also got pins by Justin Mengs (118) in 3:47, Stryker Sanders (126) in :51, Drake Schonske (132) in 2:42 and Corbin Piccirilli (138) in 3:01 as Parker Roberts (144) and Jaxon Lynch (165) both had major decision wins.

Albion will next compete in the Charger Duals at Cheektowaga on Saturday.

Churchville-Chili 37, Medina 36

Medina dropped a narrow 37-36 decision to host Churchville-Chili in a season opening non league wrestling match this evening.

The contest was tied at 36-36 at the end of the match but Churchville-Chili earned the winning point on the tie breaker criteria of having won the most matches.

Luke Duffina and Tyler Raduns both scored pins for Medina which will next compete in the Byron-Bergen Tournament on Saturday.

Pembroke sweeps Medina
Host Pembroke swept to a doubleheader win over visiting Medina in a season opening non league swim meet this evening winning the boys’ meet 58-35 and the girls’ 52-28.

Bryson Ford won the 50 Freestyle and 500 Free and Bradley Goyette the 100 Breaststroke for the Medina boys while Madeline Mark took both the 200 Free and 500 Free for the girls.

Exploding out to a 19-0 first quarter lead, Kendall went on to down Albion 59-29 in the opening round of the Lady Eagles tournament this evening.

Stella Kwiatek and Mia Price both had a three and a two for the Lady Eagles in the decisive period which also included a three by Sophia Picardo and baskets by Izzy D’Agostino and Payton Vogt.

Kendall went on to lead by 24 at the half, 33-9, and by 29 after three quarters, 49-20.

D’Agostino finsihed with 14 to lead Kendall’s balanced attack as Kwiatek tallied 11, Price 10, Brynn Hardenbrook 8, Picardo 6, Teagan Shaw 6 and Vogt 4.

For Albion, Jocelyn Friedl scored 11, Aaliyah Jones 9, Leah Pawlak 5 and Melia Prince and Aubrey Gannon 2 each.

Kendall will now face Medina in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday while Albion will meet Holley in the consolation contest at 1 p.m.

A big second quarter scoring surge keyed Medina to a 58-20 win over Holley in the opening round of the Kendall girls basketball tournament this evening.

Leading 6-3 after a low scoring first period, Medina erupted for a big 20-5 second quarter to open up a commanding 26-8 half-time advantage.

Sam Heschke scored 9, Caliyah St. Louis 6, Emberlyn Oakes 3 and Roswyn Oakes 2 for the Mustangs in the decisive period.

Medina maintained a 31 point, 39-8, lead at the end of the third period which saw St. Louis score 8, including a pair of threes.

St. Louis finished with a game high 23 and Heschke 16 to pace Medina as Alexa Demmer added 8, Emberlyn Oakes 5, Harmoni Wilson 3, Roswyn Oakes 2 and Tatianna Maxon 1.

For Holley, Brynn Thomas scored 5 and Mia Thom 3 as Alexis VanAmeron, Kyle Burne, Desiree McCormack, Jayna Burris, Alexis Lujan and Madison Lowell 2 each.

Medina will next face Kendall in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday while Holley will take on Albion in the consolation contest at 1 p.m.

A good veteran nucleus anchors a youthful Lyndonville wrestling squad which is prepping for a season opening tournament at Byron-Bergen on Saturday.

Highlighting the Tigers early season will be the annual Fred Large Memorial Tournament on December 13. The Tigers will also host Pavilion/York and St. Mary’s in a non league double dual match on December 10.

The Tigers veteran group includes seniors Justin Holmes, Grayson Romano and Ben Doolan along with juniors Brody Hazel, Shannon Withey, Michael Alexander and sophomore Chance Amsdill. Withey, Hazel and Amsdill all had 20 plus win seasons last year.

Lyndonville’s key graduation loss was Ty Holmes.

“We’ve got a good core group back and it is a young group. Youth is on our side,” said Jim Zeliff who co-coaches the Tigers with Joe Suhr.

The Tigers Genesee Region League opener is December 17 at home against Alexander.

Rebounding from a 21-17 half-time deficit, Attica rallied to down visiting Barker 45-38 in a non league boys basketball game this evening.

Anthony Taliaferro had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Barker. Peyton Wagner and Donovan Hefferon both added 6, Carter DerSarkissian 5 and Jackson Prynn 4 for the Bulldogs.

Now at 1-1, Barker next hosts Notre Dame in a non league game at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Opening the season on a high note, Lyndonville bested visiting Roy-Hart 46-37 in a non league girls basketball game this evening.

Isabella Groves scored a game high 20 points to lead the way for Lyndonville. Lilly Raduns and Hannah Fox both added 8, Alexa Robinson 6 and Braelynn Dillenbeck and Emily Dill 2 each for the Lady Tigers.

Adella Dukes paced Roy-Hart with 18 as Courtney Aquilina and Zoe Healey both added 6, Brooke Corser 4, Millie Owens 2 and Peyton May 1.

Roy-Hart grabbed a narrow 8-6 lead at the end of the first period on a late basket by Dukes but Lyndonville answered with a 12-8 second period scoring edge to rally into an 18-16 lead at the half. Groves scored 8, including a pair of threes, and Raduns 4 to spark the Lady Tigers rally.

Lyndonville maintained a slender one point, 30-29, lead at the end of the third quarter which saw three ties and one lead change.

The Lady Tigers upped the lead to six, 37-31, early in the final period after a three by Fox and a layup by Groves.

However, Roy-Hart battled back to within two at 39-37 after a pair of baskets by Dukes but the Lady Rams could not pull even.

Fox’s second big three of the period gave Lyndonville a little breathing room at 42-37.

The Lady Tigers then put a lock on the victory on a base line jumper by Robinson followed by a basket off a turnover by Fox for a 46-37 lead.

Both teams play again Friday evening as Lyndonville plays at Global Concepts in Buffalo and Roy-Hart visits Niagara-Wheatfield.

Unable to overcome a 12 point first quarter deficit, Albion dropped a 50-36 decision at Wheatland-Chili this evening in the non league season opening girls basketball game for both teams.

W-C jumped out to a 19-7 first quarter advantage and maintained leads of 12 points (33-21) at the half and 14 (42-28) after three quarters.

Aaliyah Jones led Albion with 10 as Leah Pawlak and Jocelyn Friedl both added 8, Alexis Neff 6 and Melia Prince and Madison Muckle 2 each.

Albion next hosts Akron in the Niagara-Orleans League opener on December 8.

CSAT downed visiting Barker 55-30 in a non league contest.

Elise Monaco led Barker with 17 as Cheyanne Rouse added 5, Villete Jary 4 and Mallary Fiacco and Hailey Dodge 2 each.

Wilson topped Grand Island in a non league game as Abbie Faery scored 10, Bella Thrush 7 and Kylee Elia, Grace Smith and Andrea Faery 6 each.

Wilson posted a 51-35 win over Starpoint in a non league season opener this evening as Aidan Neumann scored 18, Shamus George 12 and Ryan Hough 11.

It will be a special season opener for the Roy-Hart/Barker wrestling team which will host the second annual Dick Lang Duals Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament honors the memory of Dick Lang who coached the Rams for 10 years (1978-88) compiling a 96-17-2 record including five Niagara-Orleans League championships.

Lang, who was inducted into both the WNY Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, coached five Roy-Hart wrestlers to state championships including U.S. Olympian Lou Rosselli.

The tournament field will include Canisius, Lake Shore, Holley-Kendall, Williamsville North, Williamsville East, Williamsville South, Lafayette, Tonawanda and CSAT. The all day admission will be $5. The tourney is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

Roy-Hart/Barker will also face a challenging Niagara-Orleans League opener hosting defending champion Newfane on December 10.

Leading the team this season will be veterans Remington Marohn, Rowan Murray, Luke Fay, RJ Townsend and Lincoln Murray.

“We’ve got good numbers but we’re still young.” said Coach Matt McCauley.

The accent is on youth for the underclassmen dominated Holley-Kendall wrestling squad which will open the season with tournaments at Roy-Hart on December 6 and at Lyndonville on Dec. 13.

Leading the squad will be the veteran group of juniors Brenden Eichas, Immanuel Cornell and Parker Denning, sophomore Isaac Bartlett, freshman Carson Cady and eighth grader Jayden Rivera.

“We have a young team and high numbers,” said Coach Jim Mapes. “We are poised to have a good season and make a push for the Genesee Region League title.”

The team’s graduation losses included William Kruger who went 37-10 and Hunter Jewell-Smith who was 31-10.

The G-R opener will be December 17 at home against defending champion Byron-Bergen/Elba.
