Stingy ‘D’, balanced offense keys Medina win

Combining a stingy, aggressive defense with a balanced offense, Medina posted a 50-34 win over Roy-Hart in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game this evening at Middleport.

Preston Woodworth scored 11 and Christian Moss 9 to lead the way for Medina as Carlos Doval added 8, Kendrick Russaw and Jimmy Dieter 6 each, Kolton Fletcher and Hadrian Batista 4 each and Avion Johnson 2.

Vinny Fazzio took game high honors with 22 for Roy-Hart as Jakob West and Matt Aquilina both had 4 and Tyler Rothwell and Tysen McCaa 2 each.

Steadily pulling away, the Mustangs led 13-12 at the end of the first period, 23-16 at the half and 39-25 after three quarters. Dieter and Doval both hit threes in the third period and Moss scored 6 in the final period.

Medina is now 5-2 and Roy-Hart 0-6 in N-O action.

Mustangs avenge earlier loss to Lady Rams

Avenging an early season 33 point (65-32) road loss, Medina bested visiting Roy-Hart 57-44 in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball game this evening.

Caliyah St. Louis scored a game high 22 points, Alexa Demmer 17,  Samantha Heschke 16 and Tatianna Maxon 2 to lead the way for Medina.

Courtney Aquilina scored 19, Millie Owens 11, Adella Dukes 8, Kylie McOmber 4 and Brooke Corser 2 to pace Roy-Hart.

Medina led 12-9 at the end of the first period as St. Louis tallied 8 in the early going.

The Mustangs maintained leads of 29-17 at the half and 40-29 at the end of the third period.

Heschke hit two threes and St. Louis had 6 points in the second period. Heschke then had a two and a three and St. Louis a pair of baskets in the third period. Demmer tallied 9 in the final stanza to help cap off the win.

Medina is now 3-4 and Roy-Hart 4-3 in N-O action.

Medina High grad playing Division 1 college baseball at High Point University

Coming off two very successful years on the diamond at SUNY Niagara, Medina High graduate Aidan Paul is now set to begin his first year playing Division 1 college baseball at High Point University in North Carolina.

Paul will be a junior pitcher on the High Point squad.

Last year Paul helped hurl SUNY Niagara to the Region III championship and a fourth place finish at the national tournament as the Thunderwolves finished with a school record total of 52 wins.

Paul went 7-1 on the mound with 62 strikeouts and a 1.21 earned run average.

He earned first team All Region 3 honors and was a second team All Western New York Conference selection.

During his scholastic days at Medina he was a two time first time Niagara-Orleans All League honoree.

High Point, which competes in the Big South Conference, is scheduled to open the season at home on February 13 against St. Joseph’s.

The High Point schedule is highlighted by a series of games at the University of Florida in early March.

Five Tigers place at Medina’s annual Gary Gross Memorial Wrestling Tournament

Five Lyndonville wrestlers placed at Medina’s annual Gary Gross Memorial Tournament this afternoon.

The Tigers had Bryson Hazel (103) and Shannon Withey (157) place second, Brody Hazel (157) and Greyson Romano (165) fourth and Dom Hargrave (126) fifth.

The host Mustangs had Luke Duffina (132) place second and Tyler Raduns (157) fourth.

Hilton repeated as the tournament’s team champion with 198 points. Spencerport with 193.5, Canisteo-Greenwood 175, Grand Island 104 and Akron 97.5 rounded out the top five. Lyndonville finished sixth and Medina 10th in the 14 team field.

Canisteo-Greenwood had the most individual champions with five including Garrett Hall (110), Connor McCaffrey (126), Tristan Williamson (144), Austin Hall (157) and Carson Turner (190).

Hilton had a trio of champions including Patrick Gefell (103), Lukas Yeager (118) Jon Testa (132).

Spencerport had a pair of champions in Porter Vega (175) and Jeremiah Morgan (285) as did Byron-Bergen in James Lamb (150) and Bradley Tarter (215).

Rounding out the list of champions are Akron’s Joey Burg (165) and St. Mary’s Quinn Martin (138).

The tournament is held annually in memory of Medina Coach Eric Gross’ father, Gary, who was a long time very active supporter and booster of the Mustangs wrestling program.

Albion and Holley-Kendall have champions crowned at Livonia Tournament

Albion and Holley-Kendall both had individual weight class champions at today’s Livonia Tournament.

Albion’s Stryker Sanders won at 110 and Holley-Kendall’s Brenden Eichas at 132.

Albion also had Justin Mengs place second at 110, Jackson Snook second at 285, Jaxson Lynch third at 150 and Drake Schomske 4th at 126.

Holley-Kendall also had Immanuel Cornell (285) place third and Jeremy Lutes (103) fourth as Carson Cady (118), Brayden Mack (157), Tyler Davenport (190) and Aiden McGrain (215) all placed sixth.

Big quarter sparks Spencerport past Albion

Moving on top to stay with a big second quarter scoring surge, Spencerport went on to defeat host Albion 59-40 in a non league boys basketball game this afternoon.

Albion jumped out to a 14-9 first quarter lead as Tyler Cody had three baskets and a three and Elijah Doxey a two and a three.

However, Spencerport answered with a big 21-8 second quarter surge rallying the Rangers into a 30-22 half-time advantage. Jah’Mere Pritchett scored 8 and Kamariel Labord 6 to lead that uprisng.

The Rangers maintained an 18 point, 47-29, advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Pritchett finished with a game high 18 and Labord 15.

Cody had 17 and Doxey 16 on the afternoon for the Purple Eagles.

Lady Tigers score win over Purple Eagles

Regaining the .500 mark at 5-5, Lyndonville downed visiting Albion 42-25 in a non league girls basketball game this afternoon.

Isabella Groves scored a game high 15 points to lead Lyndonville as Alexa Robinson added 9, Braelynn Dillenbeck 7, Leah Costello 5, Leah Kenyon 4 and Hannah Fox 2.

Leah Pawlak tallied 14 to pace Albion as Aaliyah Jones and Melia Prince both had 3, Madison Muckle and Brianna Lewis 2 each and Joceyln Friedl 1.

The Lady Tigers led 11-6 after the first period, 21-11 at the half and 33-21 at the three-quarter mark. Robinson and Groves both scored a pair of baskets and Dillenbeck hit a three in the opening period to get Lyndonville rolling.

Note Dame topped Kendall 66-33 in a Genesee Region League game this afternoon.

Teagan Shaw scored 9, Izzy D’Agostino 8, Sophia Picardo 7, Mia Price 5 and Stella Kwiatek and Brynn Hardenbrook 2 each for Kendall.

Albion swimmers earn split with Akron

Albion earned a split with host Akron in a Niagara-Orleans League make-up swim meet this morning.

Albion won the boys’ meet 73-63 as Justin Kania won both the 50 Free and 100 Free, Nathan Wehling the 100 Backstroke and Logan Kast the 100 Breaststroke.

Evan Iverson doubled in the 200 Free and 500 Free for Akron as Aron Gehl took the 100 Individual Medley and Logan Meyers the 100 Butterfly.

Albion finishes the regular season at 3-5 while Akron is 3-4 with one meet remaining.

Akron won the girls’ competition 89-59 as Aurora VanDusen won both the 500 Free and Breaststroke, Brooke Milhollen the 200 Free, Avery Haak the Butterfly and Morgan Tomporowski the Backstroke.

Keira Sidari was a double winner in the IM and 100 Free for Albion as Anna Grillo took the 50 Free.

Akron improves to 5-1-1 while Albion finishes at 0-8.

Medina and Roy-Hart/Barker swimmers split

Medina and Roy-Hart/Barker split in a Niagara-Orleans League make-up swim meet this morning at Medina.

Medina won the boys’ meet 79-59 and Roy-Hart/Barker took the girls’ competition 80-71.

Bryson Ford was a double winner in the 50 Free and 100 Butterfly and Bradley Goyette took the 500 Free to lead the Medina boys.

Jackson Brauen doubled in the 200 Free and 100 Breaststroke and Hendrick Trombley in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke for Roy-Hart/Barker as Noah Corraine had a win in the 100 Free.

Medina is now 5-2 and Roy-Hart/Barker 0-7.

Samantha Fox doubled in the 50 Free and Backstroke and Mirabelle Strong in the IM and Butterfly for the Roy-Hart/Barker girls as Madelina Pavlock took the Breaststroke.

Madeline Mark doubled in the 200 Free and 100 Free and Savannah Thompson took the 500 Free for Medina.

Roy-Hart/Barker is now 4-3 and Medina 2-5.

 

Front-running Wilson girls down rival Newfane; Akron bests Albion

Defending champion Wilson improved to 6-0 by downing rival Newfane 65-24 in a Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball game this evening at Newfane.

Bella Thrush scored 18, Kylie Elia 15 and Rowan Simpson 12 to lead the way for Wilson.

The loss drops Newfane to 1-6.

Akron 62, Albion 36

In the other N-O contest, Akron bested visiting Albion 62-36.

Akron, which is now 5-1 in N-O action, led 32-15 at the half.

Albion is now 4-3.

JFK 58, Roy-Hart 32

In a non league game, JFK defeated Roy-Hart 58-32.

Courtney Aquilina scored 8, Kylie McOmber 7 and Brooke Corser and Millie Owens 6 each for Roy-Hart.

Breaking away from a 19-19 half-time tie, JFK moved out to a 34-26 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Oakfield-Alabama 66, Holley 31
Building up a 33-19 half-time advantage, Oakfield-Alabama went on to down Holley 66-31 in a Genesee Region League game.

Brynn Thomas had 9 points, Kyla Burne had 6 points, Hanna Ostrom had 6 points and 6 rebounds, Ali VanAmeron had 4 points, Jayna Burris, Ella Turpyn, and Mia Thom 2 points each and Lexi Lujan 4 rebounds for Holley.

Jumping out to a 19 point lead in the first five minutes, Akron went on to down Albion 79-43 in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game this evening at Albion.

Ace Abrams hit three threes, Blake Gerstung two threes and Derren Brooks made three baskets to spark Akron out to the commanding 21-2 lead.

The Tigers went on to lead by margins of 23-5 at the end of the first quarter, 31-17 at the half and 51-28 late in the third period.

Brooks finished with 21, Blake Gerstung 19, Ben Gerstung 16 and Abrams 13.

Tyler Cody sored 13 and Nate Gibson 12 to lead Albion.

Akron improves to 5-2 in N-O action and Albion slips to 2-5.

Wilson 49, Newfane 27
Front-running Wilson maintained a two game lead atop the N-O standings at 7-0 by rolling past visiting rival Newfane 49-27.

Aidan Neumann scored 15, Brock Lepsch 13 and Ryan Hough 12 to lead the way for Wilson.

Camryn Stover led Newfane with 8.

Leading 10-7 at the end of the first period, Wilson pulled away by outpointing Newfane 18-4 in the second period.

Neumann scored 10, including a pair of threes, and Hough and Chase Martin also both hit threes during that key stretch as the Lakemen opened up a 28-11 half-time advantage.

Wilson maintained a 22 point, 43-21, advantage at the end of the third period.

The loss drops Newfane to 3-4.

Barker vs. Medina basketball games ppd.

Citing the weather conditions, Barker has cancelled all afterschool activities which has caused the postponement of the Medina at Barker girls basketball and Barker at Medina boys basketball games.

As of this post, the remainder of this evening’s Niagara-Orleans League basketball games schedule is still on including Akron at Albion and Newfane at  Wilson in boys and Albion at Akron and Wilson at Newfane in girls.

Newfane boys repeat as N-O swim champs

Defending champion Newfane downed Akron 90-59 Thursday evening to lock up the Niagara-Orleans League boys swimming championship.

The Panthers, which took the N-O title for the first time last year going 8-0,  improve to 7-0 with one meet remaining while Akron slips to 3-3.

Noah Kneeland was a double winner in the 500 Free and 100 Breaststroke for the Panthers as Eli Kneeland took the 200 Free, Robert Hathaway the 200 Individual Medley and Dylan Lamont the 100 Backstroke.

For Akron, Quinn O’Malley won the 50 Free, Logan Meyers the 100 Butterfly and Evan Iverson the 100 Free.

The Newfane girls clinched at least a share of the title by downing runner-up Akron 90-77.

Newfane, which shared the N-O title with Roy-Hart/Barker last year, improves to 6-0-1 with one meet remaining while Akron slips to 4-1-1.

Eden Hillman won the 50 Free and Sara Klinger the 100 Free for Newfane.

Brooke Milhollen doubled in the 200 Free and Backstroke, Charlotte Carlson in the IM and Butterfly and Aurora VanDusen in the 500 and Breaststroke for Akron.

Medina to host Gary Gross Tourney Saturday

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Medina’s Luke Duffina and his Mustang teammates will host the annual Gary Gross Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

A total of 15 teams are scheduled to participate in Medina’s 11th Gary Gross Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

The tournament is held annually in memory of Medina Coach Eric Gross’ father, Gary, who was a long time very active booster and supporter of the Mustangs wrestling program.

In addition to the host Mustangs, the tournament field also looks to include Lyndonville, Akron, Byron-Bergen, Canisius, Canisteo-Greenwood, Grand Island, Greece, Hilton, McQuaid, Rochester City, Spencerport, St. Mary’s, Starpoint, and Vertus.

Hilton, which is coached by Eric Gross’ brother Craig, is the defending tournament champion.

Also on Saturday Albion and Holley-Kendall will be competing at the Livonia Tournament.
