Medina and Barker score non league wins

Making it three road wins in a span of just four day to open the season, Medina bested host Starpoint 67-55 this evening.

Jerrell Nealy scored 26 and Preston Woodworth 20 to spearhead the Medina offense as Christian Moss added 6 and Jayzon Wills and Hadrian Batista 5 each. Nealy scored 11 in the first quarter and 12 in the third while Woodworth tallied 9 in the final period.

Trailing 27-25 at the half, Medina rallied into a 46-38 lead at the three-quarter mark. The Mustangs then outscored the Spartans 21-17 in the final period to lock up the win.

Medina next visits Barker at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Niagara-Orleans League opener.

Barker 51, Alden 38
Barker tuned up for Thursday’s N-O open opener by downing Alden 51-38 as Anthony Taliaferro scored 24, Carter DerSarkissian and Donovan Hefferon 8 each and Peyton Wagner 5.

JJ Prynn led the Bulldogs on the boards with 12 rebounds as Hefferon had 11 and Taliaferro 10.

Barker led 11-5 after the first quarter, 21-17 at the half and 32-25 after three quarters.

Wilson 74, MST 51
Shamus George scored 38 and Aidan Neumann 22 to lead Wilson to a 74-51 non league win over MST.

Oakfield-Alabama 70, Lyndonville 55
Oakfield-Alabama downed visiting Lyndonville 70-55 in a Genesee Region League game.

Lane Woodworth scored 16, Colton Smith 15 and Atticus Mank 10 to lead Lyndonville as Lyric Raduns added 8, Leland Kabasta and Devon Babcock 3 each and Quincey McClinsey 2..

Albion girls edge Akron in N-O opener

Opening the league season in exciting fashion, Albion nipped visiting Akron 54-50 in a Niagara-Orleans contest this evening.

Melia Prince scored 7 and Aaliyah Jones and Madison Muckle both hit threes to lead Albion in the decisive final period as Jocelyn Friedl hit three free throws and Leah Pawlak tallied the clinching basket with four seconds remaining.

Price finished with a game high 16 points as Pawlak added 12, Jones and Muckle both had 9 and Friedl 8.

Clara Bogdan scored 11 and Abby Gerstung 10 to lead Akron as Olivia Novak, Cara Swader and Marissa Brege 7 each, Kenadee Jonathan 4 and Kylie Mangione 2.

Albion jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter led as Pawlak had a three and a two and Muckle a three.

The Purple Eagles maintained an 11 point, 28-17, lead at the half as Prince scored 6 and Muckle hit another three in the second quarter.

Akron though battled back in the third quarter outscoring Albion 18-8 to rally back to within one at 36-35. Brege had 7, including a three, Bogdan two threes and Jonathan a three to lead the Lady Tigers rally.

Late in the final period Prince rattled off five points in a row on two baskets and a free throw to give Albion a 51-46 lead.

Akron though closed the gap to within one, 51-50 in the final minute after a three by Bogdan and a free throw by Gerstung but the Lady Tigers could not pull even.

Friedl gave Albion a little breathing room by making a free throw with 19 seconds remaining. Pawlak then locked up the narrow with with a clutch basket with four seconds remaining.

Wheatland-Chili 40, Holley 27
Wheatland-Chili downed host Holley 40-27 in a Genesee Region League game.

Brynn Thomas scored 8 points, Desiree McCormick 5 and Kyla Burne and Ali VanAmeron 4 each for Holley. Hanna Ostrom also had 5 rebounds and 3 steals, McCormick 7 rebounds, VanAmeron 6 rebounds, Burne 4 steals and Thomas 2 steals.

Wilson 41, Springville 28
Wilson downed Springville 41-28 in a non league game as Abbie Faery scored 18 and Rowan Simpson 8.

Empire 8 Conference honors for Medina grad

Medina High graduate and SUNY Cortland freshman kicker Cole Callard has been named to the second team of the All Empire 8 Conference football squad.

Callard, who is a sport Management major, handled the extra point, field goal and kickoff duites for the Red Dragons.

On the season he was 51 of 51 in extra point kick attempts and 6 of 11 in field goal tries with the longest being 37 yards. He also had 67 kickoffs.

During his scholastic days at Medina he earned All-Western New York and All State football honors. He holds the record for the Mustangs lonest field goal of 47 yards.

He was also a multi year starter on the Mustangs varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams.

Team Rochester downs RBM icers

The Roy-Hart/Barker/Medina Club Hockey team traveled to Rochester to face the unbeaten home team and came away with an 8-5 loss on Saturday.

The game was closer than the final score would indicate, however.

After falling behind 1-0, RBM scored to tie the game on a goal by Clayton Wagner (Medina) assisted by John Peracciny (RH) and Sean Mettler (RH). Falling behind once again in the first period, Ryan Felicetti (Wilson) tied the score again with Viktor Snyder (Albion) assisting. The initial period ended with RBM trailing 3-2.

The second period belonged to the home team as they took a 5-2 lead into the third period. At the 11:20 mark, Gavin Ickowski (R-H) scored a shorthanded goal. Rochester quickly answered, however.

Trailing 6-3, RBM scored the next two goals to make it a 6-5 game. Scoring was Cameron Bryer (Wilson) assisted by Wagner and Felicetti assisted by Snyder.

Rochester finished the scoring with two goals.

Jonathan Esposito (Kendall) led the Team Rochester offense with three goals.

RBM next travels to unbeaten Hamburg on Wednesday evening for a 9 p.m. game.

Weekly high school sports schedule

The Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball season will tip off on Monday evening as Albion hosts Akron at 6:30 p.m.

The N-O boys basketball season will get underway on Thursday as Medina visits Barker at 6 p.m. and defending champion Akron hosts Albion at 6:30 p.m.

The N-O wrestling season beings on Wednesday with Akron at Medina, Albion at Wilson and defending champion Newfane at Roy-Hart/Barker at 6 p.m.

The week’s wrestling competition will be highlighted on Saturday with the annual Fred Large Memorial Tournament at Lyndonville.

The N-O swim season also gets underway on Thursday with Newfane at Medina and Roy-Hart/Barker at Albion at 5 p.m.

R-H/Barker hosts Dick Lang Memorial Duals

Host Roy-Hart/Barker and Holley-Kendall both went 5-1 at the second annual Dick Lang Memorial Dual Wrestling Tournament held today at Middleport.

Williamsville East-North finished at 6-0 while Williamsville South earned a one-third share of second place at 5-1.

Roy-Hart/Barker defeated Canisius 78-6, Tonawanda 54-26, Lake Shore 48-35, CSAT 71-12 and Lafayette 66-14 but lost to Williamsville East-North 57-24.

Holley-Kendall defeated Lake Shore 60-18, Tonawanda 59-21, Canisius 60-18, CSAT 66-14 and Lafayette 51-23 but lost to Williamsville East-North 42-39.

Trio leads Albion at Charger Duals

Albion went 3-1 a the Charger Duals Wrestling Tournament today at Cheektowaga.

The Purple Eagles defeated Cheektowaga 51-27, St. Mary’s. Lancaster 53-21 and Maryvale 54-28 but dropped a narrow 42-39 decision to Fredonia.

Albion was led by a trio of undefeated wrestlers inclding Jaxon Lynch, Drake Schomske and Stryker Sanders.

Medina competed at the Byron-Bergen Tournament as Luke Duffina (132) placed second and Jake Duffina (118) and Tyler Raduns (1165) both took sixth.

In the JV competition for Medina, Davi Mucoucah (138) placed first and Cole Herman (215) second.

Lady Eagles edge Mustangs for tourney title

Kendall trimmed Medina 37-31 in the championship game of the host Lady Eagles Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon.

Mia Price scored 15, Teagan Shaw 10, Sophia Picado and Izzy D’Agostino 4 each and Stella Kwiatek and Brynn Hardenbrook 2 each for Kendall.

Caliyah St. Louis led Medina with 12 as Tatianna Maxon and Sam Heschke both had 7, Roswyn Oakes 3 and Emberlyn Oakes 2.

The contest was deadlocked at 19-19 at the end of the first half which saw four ties and four lead changes. Shaw had 7 and Price 6 for Kendall during that stretch while St. Louis and Maxon both netted 7 for Medina.

Kendall moved on top to stay at 33-27 by outscoring Medina 14-8 in the third period.

Breaking away from the game’s last tie at 27-27, the Lady Eagles closed the period with a 6-0 run on a layup off a steal and a free throw by Price and a three by Shaw. Price had a total of 7 in the period.

The Mustangs could get no closer than five in the low scoring final period which saw each team score only four points.

Mustangs post win over Ken East Bulldogs

Medina completed a sweep of a pair of season opening non league games at Kenmore East by downing the host Bulldogs 67-56 this afternoon as Jerrell Nealy and Preston Woodworth combined for 51 points.

Nealy scored 26 including 10 in the third period and 7 in the fourth. Woodworth netted 25 including 9 in the first quarter and 7 in both the second and third periods.

Kolton Fletcher added 9 and Avion Johnson 4 for the Mustangs which led 35-26 at the half.

The Mustang had defeated West Seneca East 51-44 at Ken East in the season opener on Friday.

Medina will next visit Starpoint in a non league contest at 7 p.m. Monday.

Perry 81, Holley 40
Cooper Wolf scored 16, Josh Silpoch 13 and Avante Walker 6 for Holley in a 81-40 non league game loss at Perry this afternoon.

Wilson 66, Cardinal O’Hara 59
Aidan Neumann scored 38 and Ryan Hough 15 to lead Wilson to a 66-59 non league win over Cardinal O’Hara.

Lady Hawks trim Albion for tourney win

Moving on top to stay in the third quarter, Holley went on to down Albion 30-26 this afternoon in the consolation game of the Kendall girls basketball tournament.

Trailing 18-12, Holley closed the third period with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good at 23-18. Kyla Burne and Jayna Burris both had a pair of baskets and Mia Thom a three to key the Lady Hawks rally.

Albion closed to within one, 24-23, early in the final period on a basket by Jocelyn Friedl but could not pull even.

Burne answered with big back-to-back baskets upping the Holley lead to 28-23.

The closest Albion could get after that was at 28-26 on a three by Leah Pawlak as a steal and a layup at the buzzer by Burris capped off the Lady Hawks win.

Burne finished with 10, Brynn Thomas 8, Burris 6, Thom 5 and Hanna Ostrom 1 for the Lady Hawks.

Aaliyah Jones, Friedl and Melia Prince each scored 6, Pawlak 5 and Madison Markle 3 for the Purple Eagles.

Second half Pal-Mac surge downs Albion

Pulling away in the second half, Palmyra-Macedon posted a 69-50 win over Albion this evening in the host Purple Eagles non league season opener.

Breaking away from a 28-28 half-time deadlock, Pal-Mac took charge with 22-11 third period scoring surge to move out to a 50-39 lead. Three baskets by Eli Smith and two threes by Derek Leone highlighted that uprising. Smith finished with a team high 17.

Pal-Mac then put a lock on the win by outpointing Albion 19-11 in the final period.

Elijah Doxey took game high scoring honors for Albion with 29 as Tyler Cody and Nate Gibson both had 7, Wesley Olles 4 and Josh Schoeberlein 3. Doxey scored 12 in the opening period to spark the Purple Eagles out to an 18-13 lead.

Albion next visits defending champion Akron Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Niagara-Orleans League opener.

Mustangs down Trojans in season opener

A fast start and a strong finish combined to earn Medina a 51-44 victory over West Seneca East in the Mustangs non league season opener this evening at Kenmore East.

Jerrell Nealy scored 12 and Preston Woodworth 11 to lead the Medina offense as Carlos Doval added 8, Kolton Fletcher 7, Christian Moss 5, Bryan Santiago-Bautista 3, Vinny Gray 2, Hadrian Batista 2 and Jimmy Dieter 1.

Medina jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead as Nealy hit two threes, Doval one and Fletcher added a pair of baskets.

Holding slender leads of 25-22 at the half and 35-34 after three quarters, the Mustangs put a lock on the win by outpointing the Trojans 16-11 in the decisive final period.

Doval and Santiago-Bautista both hit threes and Fletcher had a three-point play to lead that late surge which also included three free throws by Woodworth and baskets by Nealy and Moss.

The Mustangs will return to Kenmore East on Saturday to face the host Bulldogs at 1 p.m.

Houghton 41, Lyndonville 31
Houghton downed host Lyndonville 41-31 in a non league contest.

Atticus Mank scored 12, Lane Woodworth 11 and Colton Smith 6 for Lyndonville

Notre Dame 66, Barker 56
Notre Dame bested Barker 66-56 in another non league contest.

Anthony Taliaferro scored 17, Donovan Hefferon 12 and Jackson Prynn 11 for Barker.

Roy-Hart downed visiting Allegany-Limestone 70-46 in a non league game as Matt Aquilina scored 29, Tysen McCaa 13 and Vinny Fazzio 10.

Host Niagara-Wheatfield topped Roy-Hart 50-21 in a non league girl contest.

Albion wrestlers top Byron-Bergen in opener

Albion opened the high school wrestling season with a 44-36 win over visiting Byron-Bergen in a non league match this evening.

Leading 38-36, Albion locked up the victory on a second period pin in 3:30 by Jackson Snook (285).

The Purple Eagles also got pins by Justin Mengs (118) in 3:47, Stryker Sanders (126) in :51, Drake Schonske (132) in 2:42 and Corbin Piccirilli (138) in 3:01 as Parker Roberts (144) and Jaxon Lynch (165) both had major decision wins.

Albion will next compete in the Charger Duals at Cheektowaga on Saturday.

Churchville-Chili 37, Medina 36

Medina dropped a narrow 37-36 decision to host Churchville-Chili in a season opening non league wrestling match this evening.

The contest was tied at 36-36 at the end of the match but Churchville-Chili earned the winning point on the tie breaker criteria of having won the most matches.

Luke Duffina and Tyler Raduns both scored pins for Medina which will next compete in the Byron-Bergen Tournament on Saturday.

Non League swimming
Pembroke sweeps Medina
Host Pembroke swept to a doubleheader win over visiting Medina in a season opening non league swim meet this evening winning the boys’ meet 58-35 and the girls’ 52-28.

Bryson Ford won the 50 Freestyle and 500 Free and Bradley Goyette the 100 Breaststroke for the Medina boys while Madeline Mark took both the 200 Free and 500 Free for the girls.

Fast start powers host Kendall to a tournament victory over Albion

Exploding out to a 19-0 first quarter lead, Kendall went on to down Albion 59-29 in the opening round of the Lady Eagles tournament this evening.

Stella Kwiatek and Mia Price both had a three and a two for the Lady Eagles in the decisive period which also included a three by Sophia Picardo and baskets by Izzy D’Agostino and Payton Vogt.

Kendall went on to lead by 24 at the half, 33-9, and by 29 after three quarters, 49-20.

D’Agostino finsihed with 14 to lead Kendall’s balanced attack as Kwiatek tallied 11, Price 10, Brynn Hardenbrook 8, Picardo 6, Teagan Shaw 6 and Vogt 4.

For Albion, Jocelyn Friedl scored 11, Aaliyah Jones 9, Leah Pawlak 5 and Melia Prince and Aubrey Gannon 2 each.

Kendall will now face Medina in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday while Albion will meet Holley in the consolation contest at 1 p.m.

Big quarter sparks Medina to win over Holley in the opening round of the Kendall Tourney

A big second quarter scoring surge keyed Medina to a 58-20 win over Holley in the opening round of the Kendall girls basketball tournament this evening.

Leading 6-3 after a low scoring first period, Medina erupted for a big 20-5 second quarter to open up a commanding 26-8 half-time advantage.

Sam Heschke scored 9, Caliyah St. Louis 6, Emberlyn Oakes 3 and Roswyn Oakes 2 for the Mustangs in the decisive period.

Medina maintained a 31 point, 39-8, lead at the end of the third period which saw St. Louis score 8, including a pair of threes.

St. Louis finished with a game high 23 and Heschke 16 to pace Medina as Alexa Demmer added 8, Emberlyn Oakes 5, Harmoni Wilson 3, Roswyn Oakes 2 and Tatianna Maxon 1.

For Holley, Brynn Thomas scored 5 and Mia Thom 3 as Alexis VanAmeron, Kyle Burne, Desiree McCormack, Jayna Burris, Alexis Lujan and Madison Lowell 2 each.

Medina will next face Kendall in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday while Holley will take on Albion in the consolation contest at 1 p.m.
