No. 8 seed Albion trimmed visiting No. 9 Dunkirk 5-3 in the opening round of the Section VI Class A2 baseball tournament this afternoon.

Albion jumped out to an early 4-1 lead by scoring twice in the first inning on a pair of bases loaded walks and twice in the second on an RBI single by winning pitcher Nate Gibson and an RBI sacrifice fly by Kaiden Froman. Two walks and a single by Elliot Trapiss set up the first inning threat while singles by Gavin Boyce and Trapiss set up the second inning opportunity.

Dunkirk did close the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning but could not pull even as Gibson registered clutch strikeouts to get out of trouble in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The Purple Eagles added a big insurance run in the sixth on an error.

Gibson pitched the first 6 innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out 12. Boyce came on to hurl the seventh inning giving up no hits and striking out 1.

Albion will next visit top seeded City Honors in the quarterfinals at noon on Saturday.

Jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings, top seeded Kendall went on to blank Genesee Region League foe No. 8 Byron-Bergen 11-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Section V Class C2 baseball tournament this afternoon at Kendall.

Kendall scored 4 quick runs in the first inning on a two-run error and a two-run single by Jacob Abrams. A double by Jonny Conte, a hit batter and a single by Vinnie D’Agostino loaded the bases to set up the opportunity.

Andrew Cole had a two-run single and Vinnie D’Agostino and Abrams RBI doubles to highlight a 5 run second inning.

An RBI triple by Vinnie D’Agostino and an RBI single by Andrew Cole then plated a pair of runs in the third to round out the scoring.

Vinnie D’Agostino finished with 3 hits as Andrew Cole and Abrams both had 2.

Nic Cole and Abrams combined to hurl a 2 hitter with 8 strikeouts on the mound in the five inning run rule win for the Eagles.

Improving to 18-2, Kendall will next face the winner of the No. 5 Naples vs. No. 4 Perry game on Tuesday.

Scoring runs in big bunches, top seeded Lyndonville romped to an 18-0 five inning run rule victory over No. 8 Hinsdale in the quarterfinal round of the Section V Class D2 softball tournament this afternoon at Lyndonville.

Brooke Robinson, winning pitcher Arnie Sturtevant, Emily Dill, Rylan Townsend, Braelynn Dillenbeck and Natalie Rath each banged out a pair of hits to lead Lyndonville’s 15 hit attack.

In the circle, Arnie Sturtevant allowed only 2 hits and struck out 7 in four innings of work. Kalynn Sturtevant came on to hurl the final frame and gave up no hits and struck out 2.

Lyndonville set the tone at the outset by scoring 4 runs in the first inning on triples by Robinson and Arnie Sturtevant, a pair of errors and a fielders choice play.

Keeping the momentum, the Lady Tigers tacked on 3 runs in the second inning as Townsend had a two-run single.

Lyndonville broke the game wide open in the third inning exploding for 10 runs as Robinson had an RBI triple, Arnie Sturtevant and Dill RBI doubles, Townsend a two-run single and Hannah Fox and Dillenbeck RBI singles.

Rath closed out the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth.

Improving to 17-1, Lyndonville will next face the winner of the No. 5 Hammondsport vs. No. 4 Andover-Whitesville on Tuesday.

Albion scored a pair of tennis victories this afternoon to capture the Niagara-Orleans League doubles tournament championship.

The Purple Eagles duo of Jillian LeBaron and Bradyn Whittier first downed the Barker team of Nick Heideman – Matthew Jordan 6-3,4-6, 7-5 in the semifinals. They then defeated the Newfane team of Matthew Alberter – Dylan Lamont 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in the championship match.

Both the Albion and Newfane teams advance to the Section VI tournament on Tuesday.

The N-O League will be represented in the sectional singles competition by Barker’s Daniel Goodwin and Albion’s Landon Graybill.

Sparked by the shutout pitching of Madyson Flint, No. 2 seed Barker downed visiting No. 7 Silver Creek 5-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class C softball tournament this afternoon

Flint hurled a sparkling one hitter with 15 strikeouts.

Barker moved on top to stay by scoring twice in the third inning on an RBI single by Kaylee Stoll and a run producing sacrifice fly by Flint. A walk and a bunt single by Aine Davis set up the opportunity.

Barker tacked on one run in the fifth as Davis doubled and came home on a wild pitch and two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Lexi Brazzell which followed singles by Peyton Bradley and Elise Monaco.

Bradley and Davis both finished with 2 hits.

Barker will next face the winner of the No. 3 Chautauqua Lake vs. No. 6 Clymer/Sherman/Panama quarterfinal game in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Also in Class C top seeded Wilson nipped No. 8 Gowanda 2-1 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals against No. 5 Falconer.

Class A2
Top seeded Iroquois pounded out 16 hits in rolling to a 14-2 five inning win over visiting No. 8 Albion which had only 4 hits.

Class B
No. 4 Fredonia banged out 15 hits in earning a 13-1 five inning win over visiting No. 5 Roy-Hart which had just 4 hits.

No. 7 Akron also dropped a 12-0 decision at No. 2 Alden.

Class C1
No. 4 Pembroke downed No. 13 Holley 11-1 in the Section V Class C1 tournament.

A strong pitching performance keyed No. 8 seed Lyndonville to a 3-0 victory over No. 9 CG Finney in the pre-quarterfinal round of the Section V Class D baseball tournament this afternoon at Lyndonville.

Quincey McClinsey and Atticus Mank combined to hurl the Tigers to the shutout win. McClinsey allowed no hits and stuck out 8 over the first four innings. Mank gave up 3 hits and fanned 6 over the final three frames.

The Tigers scored the only run they would need as it turned out in the second inning on an RBI single by Lane Woodworth.

Lyndonville added a pair of big insurance runs in the fourth inning on a passed ball and an RBI single by Shawn Robertson. A single by Austin Fonda and an error set up the threat.

Lyndonville will next face the winner of the No. 16 Mt. Morris at No. 1 Arkport/Canaseraga game in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Seeded No. 2, Medina will face a very familiar foe in the opening round of the Section VI Class B baseball tournament as the Mustangs will host No. 15 Newfane on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Vets Park.

Medina blanked Newfane twice by scores of 11-0 and 6-0 in route to capturing the Niagara-Orleans League championship with a 12-0 record. Newfane finished the N-O season at 1-11.

The Mustangs are the defending Section VI Class B champions.

Also in Class B openers at noon Saturday, No. 5 Roy-Hart will host No. 12 Alden and No. 9 Akron will visit No. 8 Silver Creek/Forestville.

Albion will begin Class A2 playoff competition on Friday as the No. 8 seed Purple Eagles will host No. 9 Dunkirk at 5 p.m. The victor will then visit top seeded City Honors at noon on Saturday.

In Class C openers at noon on Saturday, No. 10 Barker will visit No. 7 Portville and No. 12 Wilson will travel to Brocton/Cassadaga Valley.

Elks/Rotary opened its Albion Midget League season by scoring a 9-4 victory over Vets Wednesday evening.

Ryno Coots got the Elks/Rotary offense off and rolling by banging out a two-run double in the first inning.

Coots also started on the mound and recorded 6 strikeouts.

Kayden Donnelly had 2 hits and played a great defensive game at first base.

Parker McDaniels and Greyson Roberts also each chipped in with a hit.

Remi Moore came on to pitch in relief and registered 4 strikeouts. Those included 2 huge strikeouts to end the game.

Elks/Rotary built up as much as a 9-0 lead going into the fifth inning.

The regular season champion Albion boys track team took first place honors in five events at the annual Niagara-Orleans All-League meet held at Wilson this afternoon.

Adam Burgio won both the 110 Hurdles (:15.96) and the 400 Hurdles (:59.68) for Albion as Austin Huscher captured the Long Jump (19-9.25) and Noah Harrison the Triple Jump (41-2.50).

Burgio, Harrison and Huscher also teamed up with Yohanel Harris to win the 400 Relay (:44.62).

Jonathan Dix of Medina is shown clearing 10 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault. He would eclipse 11 feet in winning first in the event.

Barker also scored five wins as Luke Fay won the 800 (2:06.19). Peyton Wagner the 1600 (4:55.42) and Gabe Nestoros the 3200 (10:44.96) The Bulldogs also took both the 1600 Relay (3:42.93) and the 3200 Relay (8:46.54).

Newfane’s Nasir Spencer was a triple winner in the 100 (:11.41), 200 (:23.41) and 400 (:50.78).

Wilson’s Brock Lepsch won the Discus (122-4).

Akron had Logan Meyers win the Steeplechase (11:28.49) and Quinn O’Malley the Pentathlon (2472).

Medina’s Jonathan Dix won the Pole Vault (11-0) and Roy-Hart’s Jakob West the Shotput (41-11).

Aurora Owczarczak of Medina won the girls meter race in 1:02.31 with Madigan Regan of Akron in second, and Addison Carr of Roy-Hart in third. Owczarczak also won the 100 and 200 meter races.

Akron dominated the girls meet winning a total of 10 events. Reece Addesa won both the 800 (2:28.11) and 1500 (5:06.99). Hannah Liss the Pentathlon (2084), Ava Lombard the 100 Hurdles (:17.83), Caylin Thomas-Wells the 400 Hurdles (1:10.65), Marissa Brege the Discus (106-5), Kylie Karmazyn the High Jump (4-8) and Brooke Milhollen the Pole Vault (8-0). The Lady Tigers also won both the 1600 Relay (4:23.69) and the 3200 Relay (10:50.15).

Medina’s Aurora Owczarczak was a triple winner in the 100 (:13.25), 200 (:27.57) and 400 (1:02.21).

Albion’s Sophia Wendt won the Triple Jump (32-6.5), Barker’s Jill Fisk the Long Jump (14-10.75), Newfane’s Eden Hillman the Steeplechase (7:52.03), Roy-Hart’s Julia Rohde the 3000 (11:43.94) and Wilson’s Colleen Cliffe the Shotput (34-9.75). Wilson also won the 400 Relay (:54.80).

Today’s opening round of the annual N-O double tournament saw Barker defeat Roy-Hart 6-3, 6-2; Newfane edge Medina 7-6, 7-5 and Akron top Wilson 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament will conclude on Thursday beginning with the Barker vs. Albion and Newfane vs. Akron semifinal matches.
