Gowanda downs Kendall in Class C Regional

A big six run third inning scoring burst keyed Section VI champion Gowanda to an 8-1 win over Section V champion Kendall in the Class C Far West Regional baseball game this morning at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.
A two-run home run over the left field wall by winning pitcher Blake Herman ignited the decisive uprising as an error a bunt single, a single and a double steal accounted for the other runs.
On the mound, Herman hurled a 2 hitter with 9 strikeouts.
Kendall’s lone run came with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Nic Cole.
The Eagles only other hit was a single by Sammy Conte in the second inning but Gowanda turned a double play to quickly end that inning.
Kendall had only two more baserunners the rest of the way one on an error in the sixth inning and the other on Cole’s RBI single in the seventh.
Kendall finishes the season at 23-2 while Gowanda advances to the state Class C semifinals with a 21-3 record.
The appearance in the state playoffs was the first for Kendall wince 1999.

Regional next for Mustangs on Saturday

Having successfully cleared hurdle No. 1 in the state baseball playoffs, Section VI champion Medina will next face Section IV champion Oneonta in the Class B Regional at 2 p.m. Saturday at Frontier High School in Hamburg.
The victor advances to the state semifinals next Friday in Binghamton.
The Mustangs bring a 22-1 record into the Regional while the Yellowjackets are 19-3.
Medina, which is competing in the state playoffs for the third time in four years, bested Section V champion Wellsville 6-2 on Wednesday in the Sub Regional played at Newark.
Oneonta earned a berth in the state playoffs by nipping Lansing 2-1 for the Section IV Class B championship.
Senior Brody Fry and sophomore Preston Woodworth have shared the lions share of the pitching duties for Medina this season. When not on the mound, Fry has played in the outfield and Woodworth at second base.
The Mustangs staring infield lineup has also included senior Ryleigh Culver at catcher, senior Carter Woodworth at third base, sophomore Aidan Papaj at shortstop and freshman Cam Fike at first base with senior Tyler Koening playing second when Preston Woodworth is on the mound.
Junior Vinny Gray has manned the centerfield spot as sophomore Hadrian Batista, Kroening and senior Brady Christiaansen have also shared time in the outfield.
The Medina roster also includes senior pitcher Lukas Grimes along with junior outfielders Ryan Pegelow, Jimmy Dieter and Kolton Fletcher and sophomore infielder/outfielders Lathan McEwen-Miller and Carlos Doval.
Overall, Medina is 3-1 in four previous Far West Regional games. The Mustangs defeated Sodus 4-0 in 2003, LeRoy 10-2 in 2019, lost to Palmyra-Macedon 11-1 in 2022 and downed Wellsville 8-3 last spring.
Kendall set to begin state playoff competition against Gowanda in Regional on Saturday

Set to make just the school’s second appearance in the state baseball playoffs, Section V champion Kendall will face Section VI champion Gowanda in the Class C Far West Regional at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.
The victor will advance to the state semifinals next Friday in Binghamton.
Kendall, whose only previous trip to the state playoffs was in 1999, brings a 23-1 record into the Regional while Gowanda is 20-3.
Kendall advanced to the state playoffs by first defeating Genesee Valley-Belfast 6-0 for the Section V Class C2 championship and then edging C1 champion Geneseo 5-4 in the Section V state qualifier.
Gowanda earned a spot in the Regional by blanking Frewsburg 3-0 in the Section VI title contest.
Senior Gavin Braun and junior Nic Cole have shared the bulk of the pitching duties for the Eagles this season with senior Colby Hughes at catcher, sophomore CJ D’Agostino at first base, junior Jonny Conte at second, junior Vinnie D’Agostino at shortstop and freshman Sammy Conte at third with juniors Jonas Rhodes and Mikey Colucci and senior Gio Rodriguez in the outfield. Eighth grader Andrew D’Agostino took over the catching chores and sophomore Jacob Abrams played right field in the state qualifier game when the Eagles three seniors were away on a senior class trip. The Eagles roster also includes junior Adrian Bucco and freshman Andrew Cole.
Kendall’s 1999 squad defeated Frewsburg 4-0 in the Far West Regional but then dropped a 9-3 decision to Greenwich in the state semifinals.
Lyndonville has 3 Scholar-Athlete teams
Three Lyndonville varsity spring sports teams have earned New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Team awards by compiling a composite average of at least 90.
The three teams and their averages include, Girls Softball (97.06), Girls Track and Field (95.26) and Boys Track and Field (90.36).
The team members contributing to the award winning average are as follows:
Girls Track and Field: Sarah Corser, Arietta Metty, Emily Miner, Alyssa Prine and Shelby Tackley
Boys Track and Field: Aiden Allen, Amir Huzair and Ethan Franks

Medina tops Wellsville in Class B sub regional

In a repeat of last year’s state playoff opening round victory, Section VI champion Medina downed Section V champion Wellsville 6-2 in the Class B Sub Regional this evening at Colburn Park in Newark.
Last Spring Medina bested Wellsville 8-3 in the Class B Far West Regional.
Tonight’s victory vaults Medina, which improves to 22-1, into the Class B Regional against Section IV champion Oneonta on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Frontier High School in Hamburg.
Run producing hits by Carter Woodworth, Tyler Kroening and Ryleigh Culver provided most of the offense for Medina which managed a total of only 5 hits.
Preston Woodworth turned in a sparkling effort on the mound for the Mustangs allowing only 3 hits and striking out 11.
The Mustangs defensive efforts were highlighted by a double play turned by Kroening in the first inning.
Medina wasted no time in moving on top to stay as Carter Woodworth banged out a two-run single in the top of the first inning. A walk to Vinny Gray and a single by Aidan Papaj set up the opportunity.
The Mustangs doubled the advantage to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Kroening. A walk and an error set up that treat.
Wellsville got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth but Medina got that one back with interest in the top of the fifth.
The Mustangs tallied twice in the fifth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Culver to up the advantage to 6-1. Preston Woodworth helped himself at the plate in that frame as he led off with a triple and came home on the wild pitch. Then, following a walk and an error, Culver banged out his run producing single.
The Lions picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of hits but would get no closer than 6-2.
Preston Woodworth capped off the win in strong fashion by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh.
Medina advanced to the state playoffs by downing Southwestern 6-0 in the Section VI Class B championship game. Wellsville claimed the Section V Class B title with a 4-3 win over LeRoy.
This is Medina’ third appearance in the state playoffs in the last four years.

Medina senior to wrestle at Norwich U.

Pushing across a run in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning, Kendall nipped Geneseo 5-4 in the Section V Class C state qualifier baseball game this evening at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.
Sammy Conte singled in the game winning run for the Eagles as a leadoff double by Vinnie D’Agostino set up the opportunity.
“That was huge. That is his third walk off hit,” said Eagles Coach Tige Noni of Conte’s game winner.
“The kids never gave up,” said Noni whose Eagles had to come from behind twice. “It wasn’t very pretty but we got it done. The battle was epic.”
Nic Cole did yoeman work on the mound for Kendall pitching all seven innings scattering 7 hits and striking out 12.”
“It was a great game overall,” said Cole. “The bats getting the runs to get us back in it really brought my energy back up.”
“Nic really threw just a great game. He got after them,” said Noni.
Geneseo jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Tyler Churchfield.
Kendall though answered right back with the tying run in the home half of the first on an RBI single by Vinnie D’Agostino.
Geneseo regained the lead at 4-1 by scoring three times in the second on a two-run single by Bryce Patterson and an RBI single by Luke Davis.
However, the Blue Devils could not cross home plate again as Cole bore down allowing only two more hits and striking out 7 over the final five innings. The Eagles defense also came up with a big double play triggered by Vinnie D’Agostino at shortstop to get out of trouble in the fifth inning.
The Eagles rallied back into a 4-4 tie by scoring three times in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Cole, a balk and a wild pitch. A single by CJ D’Agostino and a hit batter set up the threat.
Geneseo did get two runners aboard with one out in the top of the seventh but Cole slammed the door on the threat by registering two clutch inning ending strikeouts.
That set the stage for Conte’s dramatic game winning single in the home half of the seventh.
Cole and Vinnie D’Agostino both had 2 hits on the evening as did Patterson for the Blue Devils.
Kendall played the game a bit shorthanded as three senior starters – catcher Colby Hughes, first baseman/pitcher Gavin Braun and outfielder Gio Rodriquez – were away on a Senior trip.
Improving to 23-1, Kendall will next face Section VI champion Gowanda in the Class C Far West Regional on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Dwyer Stadium. The victor will advance to the state semifinals.

Medina will face Wellsville in a state playoff rematch on Wednesday at Newark

In a rematch of last year’s Far West Regional, Medina will begin state playoff baseball competition by taking on Wellsville in a Class B Sub Regional at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Colburn Park in Newark.
The victor will advance to Saturday’s Regional against Section IV champion Oneonta with that winner advancing to the state semifinals.
Top seeded Medina advanced to the state playoffs by downing No. 6 Southwestern 4-0 in the Section VI Class B championship game on Saturday.
Top seeded Wellsville advanced by winning the Section V Class B championship with a narrow 4-3 victory over No. 2 LeRoy.
Medina brings a 21-1 record into the Sub Regional while Wellsville is 16-3. Interestingly, Wellsville handed Medina its lone loss 4-1 in a late season non league contest at Vets Park.
In the Far West Regional last year, Medina needed a big late inning scoring burst to down Wellsville 8-3.
Breaking away from a 1-1 deadlock, the Mustangs erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to key the win. A two-run single by Carter Woodworth and an RBI single by Aidan Papaj highlighted that decisive uprising as three wild pitches and a balk plated the other runs.
This marks the first year that Section VI is involved in a Sub Regional. Previously, the Section VI and Section V champions met in the Far West Regional with the victor advancing to the state semifinals. Class B is the only one of the six Section VI classifications that has a Sub Regional game this year.

Albion 19U girls win soccer season opener
The Albion 19U Division girls team opened Rochester District Youth Soccer League competition with a 1-0 victory over host Avon.
Ava Woolston scored the lone goal for Albion and Aaliyah Jones earned the shutout in goal.
State qualifier is next for Kendall on Tuesday

A berth in the state playoffs will be on the line when Kendall takes on Geneseo in the Section V Class C state qualifier baseball game on Tuesday evening at 6 at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.
Top seeded Kendall advanced to the state qualifier by downing No. 2 Genesee Valley-Belfast 6-0 in the Class C2 championship game earning the Eagles their first sectional title since 1999.
No. 3 seed Geneseo advanced by besting top seeded Sodus 12-3 in the Class C1 title contest.
The victor will advance to the Far West Regional on Saturday against Section VI champion Gowanda.
Kendall last played in the state qualifier in 1999 when the Eagles downed Red Jacket 7-1 to advance to the state playoffs.
That season Kendall blanked Section VI champion Frewsburg 4-0 in the Far West Regional to advance to the state semifinals.
Kendall brings a 22-1 record into the state qualifier while Geneseo is 19-4.
