Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Melanie Green tees off on her first hole of today’s second round at the Epson Pro Tournament Casella Golf Championship at Guilderland, N.Y.

Three bogies over the first six holes set an ominous tone for today’s second round as Medina’s Melanie Green missed the cut at the Epson Pro Tour’s Casella Golf Championship being played at the Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland, New York (near Albany)

Green, who was 1 over par after Friday’s opening round, started play today on the back nine. She quickly ran into trouble with bogies on the 11th, 13th and 15th holes to drop to the make the cut score of 4 over.

Rebounding, she made a nifty shot out of the bunker on the 18th hole to stay in contention to make the cut at 4 over.

However, disaster struck on the very next hole as she had a very costly triple bogey on hole No. 1 to balloon to 7 over. The disastrous hole, which all but dropped her out of contention to make the cut, included a shot into the rough and another out of play for a one stroke penalty for a 7 for the hole.

Another bogey on the 5th hole put her 8 over. She did get that shot back with her lone birdie of the day on No. 8 and finished with a 7 over par round of 78.

“It was not good,” said Green of the off day. “It was not good at all.”

Promotions an annual reward for Medina FC

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Medina Mustangs FC locked up the 1st Division title with a 1-0 win over Ukraine last Sunday. Nate Dillenbeck and Casey Winiecki here battle for a header during the Ukraine contest.

Annual title success on the field has earned the Medina Mustangs FC a promotion to a higher division in the Buffalo District Soccer League each of the past three years.

Medina’s big run began in 2023 when a victory in the 3rd Division championship game earned the Mustangs a promotion to the 2nd Division for the 2024 season.

Making the most of that promotion, the Mustangs captured the regular season 2nd Division championship with an 8-3 record to earn a promotion to the 1st Division for this season.

Again the Mustangs have made the most of the opportunity capturing the 1st Division regular season title with an 8-0-1 record with one game remaining by downing Ukraine 1-0 last Sunday.

The title has earned the Mustangs a promotion to the Championship Division for next year. The Championship Division is the second highest in the league behind only the Premier Division.

Medina will close out the 1st Division regular season by hosting second place Mandem at 6 p.m. Sunday at Vets Park. Mandem has a 6-0-3 record.

Having also earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming 1st Division playoffs, Medina will host a semifinal round game on August 3.

In all 11 players have scored goals for Medina so far this season led by Nate Dillenbeck with 10 and Cole Callard and Peter Martillotta both with 5.

The Mustangs assist leaders are Ethan Leonard with 6 and Greg Husung with 4.

Green competing at Epson’s lone N.Y. tourney

By Mike Wertman, Sports Writer Posted 18 July 2025 at 2:55 pm

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Melanie Green tees off on the first hole this morning to open the Epson Tour’s Casella Golf Championship at Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland, N.Y.

The Epson Pro Golf Tour is making its only stop in New York State this weekend and Medina’s Melanie Green got off to what she describes as a “slow start” for today’s opening round of the Casella Golf Championship being held at the Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland (near Albany).

Green fired a one over par round of 72 to open the tourney on the very hilly course and was five back of the leader (at 4 under) at the end of the morning session.

She rebounded from a bogey on the third hole to pull even with her only birdie of the day on No. 9.

However, Green was unable to offset a bogey on No. 11 as she just missed registering a birdie on three other holes as the putt either rimmed out or came up just sort. That bogie came after she found a sand trap for the only time on the round.

“I had some rims today but it happens to everybody,” said Green “I stayed close though and that is the big thing. You can’t win a tournament on the first day but you sure can lose it. I just have to make make some putts tomorrow.”

Green hits out of the only sand trap she found on the round.

Green was pretty satisfied with her irons and driver play as she made 17 of 18 fairways. “The fairways on this course are narrow so you have to be accurate, she added.”

Green is scheduled to tee off for the second round on Saturday at 1:14 p.m. on the 10th hole.

The field will be cut after Saturday’s round and the tourney will conclude on Sunday.

A note to anyone planning on attending the Saturday or Sunday rounds to be ready to do plenty of climbing as this is a very hilly course especially on the back 9.

Green and her caddie and best friend Leonor Medeiros keep an eye on her fairway shot.

The course is lined with large pine trees one of which frames this photo of Green.
