Local quartet advances to Section V wrestling semifinals

Four local wrestlers, Jeff Gress Jr. (99) and Tony Recco (113) from Lyndonville along with Martin Beadle (138) and Kevin Avery (145) from Holley, each won two matches today to advance to Saturday’s semifinal round of the Section V Division 2 (small schools) state qualifier tournament at SUNY Brockport.

Gress pinned Logan Windnagle of Addison in 2:34 in the opening round and then pinned Sam Wolfe of Warsaw in 2:47 in the quarterfinals.

Recco, who captured a Section V title in 2012, scored a lightning quick 16 second pin over Anthony Miraglia of Byron-Bergen in the opening round and then decisioned Jason Ellsworth of Attica 10-2 in the quarterfinals.

Beadle opened with a fast 40 second pin over Dominick Mogavero of Batavia and then decisioned Warren Oderkirk of Pavilion 9-0 in the quarterfinals.

Avery quickly advances with a pair of first period pins of 1:18 over Robert Murphy of Wayland-Cohocton in 1:18 and then of 47 seconds over Thomas Follman of Lyndonville in the quarterfinals.

The finals are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
