Local gridders earn All-WNY honors

Six local players have earned spots on the annual All-Western New York football squad.

Versatile Barker/High senior quarterback/running back/defensive back/kicker Jacob Haight has been named to the first team.

Medina running back/linebacker Kyle Barna and Albion lineman Steven Stauss, both seniors, have earned spots on the second team.

Medina junior quarterback Jason Hellwig and senior running back/linebacker Dan Brown along with Albion senior running back/linebacker Ed Wolfe have all received honorable mention.

A four year varsity starter, Haight had 1,201 all purpose yards and a total of 16 touchdowns this season including 821 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns and 241 yards receiving and five TDs. On defense he had 52 tackles, 3 interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Barna had 1,370 all purpose yards and 13 touchdowns including 587 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns and 32 receptions for 523 yards and 5 TDs. Defensively, he had 51 tackles and 4 sacks.

Stauss, a three year, two-way starter had 78 tackles, 3 sacks and a fumble recovery.

Hellwig, who this season became Medina’s career touchdown pass leader with 29, completed 83 of 153 passes for 1,158 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also ran for two scores.

Brown had 1,085 yards and 10 touchdowns including 769 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns. Defensively he had 57 tackles and 4 fumble recoveries.

Wolfe had 1,081 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. On defense, he made 61 tackles.
