Local athletes set for state track meet

Contributed Photo – Holley senior Sam Bates is one of four local athletes who will be competing in this weekend’s state Track and Field championships.

A quintet of local athletes will be competing in the state Track and Field Division 2 (small schools) championships at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Friday and Saturday.

Those five includes Medina senior Madelynn Rutledge, Holley senior Sam Bates, Albion junior Cencere Lowe,  Medina junior Gordon Young and Roy-Hart junior Braden Ricker.

Rutledge qualified in the Long Jump as she placed second at the Section VI state qualifier with a leap of 18-2. She also placed second in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump at the Section VI Class B meet.

Bates will be competing in the High Jump after winning the Section V Class B3 meet with a state qualifying height of 5-3.

Lowe qualified in the Long Jump after winning the Section VI Class B meet with a qualifying distance of 23-2 1/4 which is also an Albion and Niagara-Orleans League record.

Young will also be competing in the High Jump after placing second at the Section VI state qualifier with a height of 6-2. He also won the High Jump at the Section VI Class B meet.

Ricker placed second in the 200 with a time of :22.57 to earn a spot in the state meet. He also placed second in the 200 at the Section VI Class C meet.
