Late surge powers Albion into soccer semis
A late two goal scoring burst earned No. 4 seed Albion a 3-1 victory over visiting No. 5 Springville this evening in a Section VI Class B1 quarterfinal soccer clash of unbeatens.
The victory advances Albion to a semifinal meeting against top seeded East Aurora at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Williamsville East. East Aurora downed No. 9 Newfane 4-1.
Breaking away from a 1-1 deadlock, Albion regained the lead for good when Claire Squicciarini scored what proved to be the game winning goal off an assist from Abby Scanlan with 17:17 remaining.
The Purple Eagles then put a lock on the victory when Scanlan scored with 3:19 remaining from Brylie Hapeman.
Albion had grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Kendall Derisley scored just 8 minutes into the first half off an assist from Hapeman.
However, Springville rallied into a tie when Hannah Goetz scored at 25:06 of the second half.
Albion though took less than eight minutes to regain the lead for good as a nice centering kick by Scanlan set up Squiccirini for what proved to be the game winning goal.
Albion improves to 16-0-1 while Springville suffers its first loss of the season and finishes at 12-1-3.
