Late surge earns Kendall cagers opening win
Rebounding from as much as a 10 point third quarter deficit, Kendall rallied with a big 27-13 fourth period scoring surge to defeat visiting Pavilion 66-61 this evening in the Eagles non league season opening basketball game.
Nate Warters scored 11 and John Rath 9 to spearhead Kendall’s decisive fourth quarter surge.
Breaking away from a late tie, the Eagles regained the lead for good as Rath scooped up a loose ball and passed to Warters who hit a three to put the Eagles on top to stay.
“They were resilient,” said Kendall Coach Matt Zimmer. “I’m really proud of the way they played. They definitely brought some energy in that final quarter.”
Pavilion jumped out to a 13-2 lead at the outset but Kendall closed to within three, 17-14, by the end of the period as Rath hit a pair of threes.
Keeping the momentum, the Eagles then rallied into a 30-27 halftime advantage as Warters tallied 13 in the second period.
However, Pavilion came out strong at the outset of the second half outpointing Kendall 21-9 in the third period to regain a 48-39 advantage.
The last comeback though belonged to Kendall as the Eagles answered with the decisive 27-13 fourth quarter surge to clam the victory.
Warters finished with 26 points and Rath 18 as Mason Kuhn added 11 and Hunter Menze 8. Kuhn also had 12 rebounds, Menze 11 rebounds and Rath 11 assists.
For Pavilion, Zach Wiedrich had 19 points, including 5 threes, Ryley Elliott 11 points and 15 rebounds and Colby Tillotson 14 points.
Lima Christian 65, Holley 42
Leading 29-20 at the half, Lima Christian used a 22-12 third period scoring edge to key a 65-42 non league win over visiting Holley.
Pat Bower led Holley with 22 points.
