Larger roster is boost for Tiger grapplers
LYNDONVILLE – Taking aim at a rebound season, the Lyndonville wrestling squad is bolstered by a roster double the size of last year.
“It’s a huge thing for us,” said Coach Jeff Gress whose Tigers have 18 on the roster compared to only nine a year ago. “It’s really something to build around. Now we’re looking to be competitive in dual meets which we weren’t able to do last year.”
Junior Tony Recco, who captured a state title as a freshman, heads Lyndonville’s veteran contingent. Recco went 41-3 last year and captured a Section V Class B title but an injury prevented him from competing in the Section V state qualifier.
The Tigers also return senior Alex Murphy, juniors Chris McDonald and Devin Joy, sophomore Tom Follman and freshmen Jeff Gress Jr., Garren Bayne, Dustin Hinkley and Dustin Joy.
Hinkley finished third at the Class B Tournament while Follman took fourth, Dustin Joy fifth and Gress Jr. sixth.
“Our lineup looks pretty solid,” said Coach Gress. “I really think we can build around this group of guys. The big thing is to keep everyone healthy.”
