A lakeshore flood warning is in effect until midnight tonight, and a beach hazards statement also is in effect until this evening, the National Weather Service in Buffalo said.

The lakeshore flood warning includes Orleans and Niagara counties.

The Weather Service said brisk westerly winds will persist through the evening resulting in increased wave action from a lake with already high water levels.

A beach hazards statement is issued when there is a high swim risk.

“This means life threatening waves and currents are expected,” the Weather Service said. “Stay out of the water and stay away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls.”
