Lady Rams earn first N-O victory

Snapping a season long eight league game losing streak, Roy-Hart downed visiting Newfane 63-50 this evening in a Niagara-Orleans girls basketball contest.

The other two scheduled N-O games, Albion at Medina and Akron vs. Barker, were both snowed out.

The Lady Rams attack was spearheaded by a trio of sophomores as Shelby Wolf scored a game high 21 points, Rileigh McCabe 16 and Mallory Steiner 14. Lexie Lovewell and Meghan Washington both added 4 and Ashley Hill and Maddie Fry 2 each.

Megan Knoll scored 12 and Hannah Hambruch 11 to pace Newfane as Rachel Chunco and Lauren Bouseman both added 8, Nicole Leverentz 5, Paige Littman 3, Madalyn Traverse 2 and Kaitlin Beiter 1.

Roy-Hart jumped out to an 18-9 first quarter lead by putting together an 11-0 run to close the stanza. Wolfe scored 12 in the period to spake the Lady Rams in the early gong.

The Lady Rams boosted their advantage a bit to 13, 29-16, at the half by closing the second period with another 11-0 run. Hill, Wolf, Washington, McCabe and Steiner all chipped in with baskets during that run.

The Roy-Hart lead increased to 18, 36-18, early in the third period but Newfane came storming back.

The Lady Panthers erupted for a big 21-5 turnover aided run to close the period and slice the deficit to just two 41-39, at the three-quarter mark.  Knoll scored 7 and Chunco, Boudeman and Leverentz 4 each to lead that rally.

Newfane pulled even at 41-41 on a layup by Knoll at the outset of the final period and stayed within one at 43-42 on a free throw by Knoll but this time it was Roy-Hart that came charging back.

Regaining the momentum, Roy-Hart put together a clutch 14-0 run to move back on top to stay by 15 at 57-42 with two minutes to go.

A fast break layup by Fry followed by a jumper by Lovewell ignited that uprising which also included 6 points by McCabe.

The Lady Rams closed out the victory with a layup by Wolf and a three by Steiner.

Wheatland-Chili scored a 63-24 win over visiting Lyndonville in a Genesee Region League girls contest.

Boys Basketball
Newfane 70, Roy-Hart 41
Leading by a narrow three point, 24-21, margin at the half, host Newfane exploded for 56 points in the second half to post a 70-41 N-O win over Roy-hart.

The Panthers outscored the Rams 19-7 in the third period to extend the advantage to 43-28 at the three-quarter mark. A big 27 point fourth period then locked up the win.

Garrett Srock took game high scoring honors with 21 for Newfane as Deuce Capen added 12 and Josh Everett 11. Srock scored 11 in the second and Everett 9.

Charlie Brigham scored 7 and Charlie Bruning and Lance Krieger 6 each for Roy-Hart.

Newfane is now 5-2 and Roy-Hart 1-7 in N-O competition.

Wrestling

The Holley varsity ‘B’ wrestling team split a pair of matches this evening against varsity opponents. The Hawks defeated Gilead 54-30 but lost to Gates-Chili 45-31.
