BARKER – Free throw shooting down the stretch proved to be the difference as Barker trimmed Kendall 27-21 this evening in a season opening non league girls basketball game.

Turnovers and cold shooting dominated much of the contest but in the end it was free throw opportunities that decided the issue. Each team in fact had over 20 turnovers on the evening.

Trailing 15-13 heading into the final quarter, Barker outscored Kendall 14-6 down the stretch, including a 10-3 edge in made free throws, to claim the win. The Lady Raiders went 10 of 18 from the line in the period and the Lady Eagles 3 of 8.

Three free throws by Kelsi Flegal, along with one each by Maicie Baker, Morgan Brown and Julie Atwater, rallied Barker into a 19-16 lead three minutes into the final period.

Kendall did rally back into a brief 20-19 advantage on a three by Shelby Reis with just under four minutes to play but the Lady Eagles managed just one more point the rest of the way.

Barker regained the lead for good at 21-20 on a jumper by Melissa Grosshans with 3:35 to go.

The Lady Raiders then put a lock on the victory on a lay-up by Olivia Denny along with two free throws by Brown and one by Caitlyn Mason.

Barker led 4-2 at the end of a turnover filled opening period.

The lead then changed hands four times in the second quarter which ended with Barker up 13-12 on a late jumper by Denny.

Kendall grabbed a 15-13 lead at the three-quarter mark as a three by Nicole Browe was only tally of the period.

Denny and Mason both scored eight points to lead Barker.

Browe took game high honors with 11 and Reis added six for Kendall.
